This is listed as a 1969. Is it a 1970 or 1971? Somewhat unique to me is the engine, a JLO perhaps, and the hood vent on one side. What is deal here team? -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- For Sale: 1969 Scorpion Mark 3 Posted By: Ben Time Posted: 2012-03-01 13:54:00 Location: Swatara , MN Email: trentgoofy@yahoo.com Phone: 218-566-1548

Looks to be a fairly low mile unit.
Does the hood vent make this a 1971?

My guess is it is a 1970. 1971 Sleds had round Scorpion decals on the side of the hood. Cool snowmobile! Dennis

I think that 1970 was the only year for the 399 Kohler engine. The 1971 sleds had CCW engines. The Kolher engines were known for overheating. This could explain the vent in the hood on the fan side of the engine. Most Kohlers were re-fitted with a return line on the HR carburetor to prevent vapor lock. Dennis Moore

I was looking at the first photo and thought it was a single cylinder for some reason. And it did not look familiar so i guessed a single JLO for some reason!
After reading your post identifying it as a Kohler, I check out the pics more closely and noticed it's a two cylinder. Still, I haven't seen one on the bubble nose before. It's a good trio of reference photos to have on hand. Thanks.

Are those red hand grips what they came with, compared to the motocross/BMX type grips in black and red that came on the 68-69 models?

the red grips are correct. the emblems are 70 or earlier. the vent has been added. the mk series didn't have them stock as far as i know. stinger series did.

Pretty sure 70.
Hinge style hood makes it 70 or newer.
Kohler and the side emblems make it a 70.
Vents have been added and probably a wise addition.

some of the 71' Mark III and IV sleds still used the chrome Scorpion emblems. This one is a 1970 though with the Kohler. My neighbor has a 71' Mark III with a 493 Hirth. He bought it new. Most of the 71's had the red and white stripe down the back of the seat rest.
