I installed a new high performance rebuildable gas shock/spring set.
It's a Comet 400602c 990.
The first half of travel has an oil by-pass for a smoother small bump ride.
The second half of travel is for those larger bumps.
It is very easy to adjust the spring tension. I simply grab the spring and turn it...just takes a few seconds!

I have been considering something like this for a while now but never got it done. Did you get to ride it at all with that shock ? What spring rate did you go with ? I always planned to get a ps2 spring rated, but haven't to date yet.

No I haven't tried it yet...will have to see come winter. I'll report back when I test it. It was originally intended for another sled but I thought I'd give it a try, as the shock length of 13.5" matched the PS III.
I don't know the spring rate. All I know for now is when I jump up and down on the sled yelling YEEHAW!!!, it feels just right!
If you get the stock spring rated, keep in mind that the stock shock has no spring pressure. A nitrogen shock have a "built in" spring rate of its' own. Add that to get a combined spring rate. All of that is quite hard to do when buying stuff online...I just took a chance and jumped on the purchase before someone else bought this nos shock set.
It feels a bit more heavy duty "cross country", which matches my riding style. The first half of travel has little to no shock resistance and the last portion is quite resistant to bottoming. I feel like this is a win win situation!...we'll see.

I took my Sting out for a test ride in a highway ditch (freshly mowed and wet).
My new shock is REAL smooth...Big improvement!

I got it from Dr Mario who has an add in the V.S. classifieds. He sells mostly Polaris stuff. This is an aftermarket spring/shock combo which happens to fit well on my Sting! 1-920-743-7660 Ask for Don.

Rene, Did you have to modify the shock mounts to make it fit, did you cut or weld anything?

That's cool! I've never seen anything harder to turn than my 79 shocks. I even made a special tool for it that fits in the tool box.

Maybe you're going about it all wrong...maybe you just need to start doing some push ups!

Can you tell me the dimensions of this shock? My brother is trying to retsore a sting that is missing the shock all together and we need to know how long of a shock to order. (We are up in Canada and cannot find the part number you listed).

Hi Ken.
The stock shock size is 9" closed and 13'5" open. I don't remember the exact specs, but it very close from what I do remember. I've tested it and the suspension has full range of motion with this new spring and shock set. Call Dr. Mario and see if he still has some. He's a good guy to deal with.
I had the sled out on the river a few days ago and was impressed how it performs, considering the limited travel.
