I just picked up a 1977 Scorpion Sting and need a little help getting it going. A previous owner robbed the points and condensers and their screws. Anyone know of a replacement or equivalent? Also the coils need some help and their screws are missing too so probably like to find new if possible.
Thanks

Hello vtscorp.
Sooooo...what you're saying is, the guy who owned it before you had a few screws loose?
I'm not much help, but I just couldn't help myself.

Have you or can you find a donor engine. Is there a sled salvage yard in your area?
Find any old JLO, Rockwell, or Cuyuna, and rob the points, and hardware items from it. Your local salvage yard might even have a partially disassembled engine laying there, or better yet, one that is locked up.
Bring your flywheel puller with.
Do you know how to set the point gap and timing?
By the way, the used points will be better than the new ones from the aftermarket, just clean them up good.
Keep us posted, and post a pic of that bad ass Sting!

I have a 72 stinger II that I've done the points on but having a harder time finding parts for the Cuyuna engine. I also need to know what size belt the 77 sting takes.

Would the JLO, Rockwell and Cuyuna be the same part? Does anyone know the part number? The only sled salvage yards are a bit of a drive so it would be easier to order.

Where are you located vtscorp? The belt is a dayco 1034. I like to use the belt for a Yamaha Phazer. I'm pretty sure its an ll06.

I may have a complete stator plate for you to bolt in. I will have to look in my parts stash tonight.

I installed new points and condensers, found the right size screws, new plug wires, timed it, new fuel line and filter and cleaned the carb. After a fight with old tank sludge the engine is running. Now it would appear the clutch needs some help. The large face plate bolt is all mangled, does anyone know if there's anywhere to get a new one? Only the inner half turns with the engine the outside turns free. What is supposed to keep it from turning? Power thrust I has splines but the P T II doesn't have any. Can I put a spare PT I on until I repair the original?

It's simply a pressed on tapered fit. Make sure to tighten the bolt while holding on to the outer clutch hub assembly. Also line up all three dots on the outer edges to keep the whole clutch assembly in balance.

The cover/faceplate is pretty chewed up where it's been slipping because the bolt has probably been loose for a while. I put a power thrust I on until I get some parts.

I rode it around the yard a bit today until the carb stopped pumping fuel. I knew I would need a rebuild kit instead of just cleaning it.

I just noticed the exhaust manifold was loose. When I looked closer I noticed there's no gasket. Should there be a gasket and does anyone know where to get one?

I go to any local snowmobile shop and order from their aftermarket Sun n Sno catalog. Ebay also has them at times. I usually buy a complete Winderosa gasket and seal set. I don't trust an engine unless I take it all apart...I'm sort of ocd that way.

Yes, it needs manifold gaskets. You can get full gasket sets, or just top end sets, they are all over e-bay, and or your favorite parts supplier.
I would get the full kit, that way your all set if you wind up taking the motor apart.

Yeah, that's what I thought.
It seems the farther into this thing I get the more things I find are missing. I'd like to run it a little this winter then it might get a complete teardown this summer.

Okay, I've torn down the engine, new gaskets and seals, new rings, rebuilt carb(walbro wf-31), new points and condensers, new plugs and wires, timed it, new belts, new fuel lines and filter. I don't think there's much more to replace but still can't get it running right. It starts easy and idles but has no power. If I give it a push and jump on it will slowly accelerate. It won't go up hills. Once it's going 20 or so it takes off and flies great until I slow down.

Are your plugs and caps the non-resistor type? I use B9ES plugs and non resistor caps. I guess it could be the ignition coils also. Do you have a spare carb that you know works good that you could try?
