I don't think we should set our sites too high or it may never get built. I suggest a simple 1969 or 1970 with a 293 or 297 Sachs single. I also suggest a black hood with a red stripe and a trunk style red seat. Whenever I think of an old Scorpion this is what comes to mind. I may have some parts to donate for this sled.
My second choice would be a 1978-1979 Lil Whip with a Cuyuna 290 engine. This would be my second choice because it could be advertised as a "Made in the USA", "Made in Minnesota" sled with the "American Made Cuyuna" and the "American Made Walbro" carburetor. The sled could have some "Made in the USA" decals and some American flag decals on the hood.
Sort of a "Patriotic Theme" for the Presidents Inauguration in January 2013.
I feel very strongly that if we (the Scorpion Forum) donates parts for a charity sled that the forum should get some free advertisment out of the deal. Perhaps a big "Donated by the Scorpion Forum" advertising poster to set alongside the sled at Waconia.

Dennis, I respect what you are saying BUT There have been several builds before. To my knowledge none of them have been "forum" sponsored. They have been vintage snowmobile sponsored from people of all walks from all areas. Where it all started was the "Make a Wish" Massey. It was built for a fantastic young man out of the NY area to come to ride at LOS. After that It was auctioned off and given back to a fine young man and taken from MN to NY with the help of many individuals for no charge. All proceeds were given to the Make a wish foundation. I wish I could find some info on how it all started. But in a nutshell, Make A Wish contacted the LOS group that Forest wanted his "make a wish" to be a trip to LOS to ride vintage snowmobile's. He of course would not have a sled. So, a sled was found! Here is some archived info. vintagesleds.com/archives2/2008/05/02/the-ski-whiz-arrives/There was a 70 292 Blizzard clone? that was built. Members of quite a few forums joined in and built it. All proceeds went to Make a wish. This was auctioned off at Waconia. There was a John Deere 340S that was built. This was a huge project and quite a undertaking. Some parts were very hard to come up with but it was done. Again proceeds given to Make a wish. An article on it. articles.aberdeennews.com/2010-08-23/farmforum/26434829_1_snowmobiles-races-big-weekendThis last year a Chaparral was built. I didn't follow this one as close so I don't have a ton of information. Here is some info on the build. Proceeds given to make a wish. vintagesleds.com/bs/index.php/topic,55486.0.html I think one or two of the sleds were purchased, the money being donated to the Make a wish, and then the sled was donated to the hall of fame. Personally I look at this as good for the sport. A "multi forum effort". The builds never have been sponsored entirely by a forum, they have been sponsored by people. The first one for Forrest could be argued to have been one forum orientated but that is probably more so because of Forest's wish to come to LOS which is sponsored by that same board. I don't know how much "forum advertising" was done at the auctions as I have never been to one. Maybe I am misinterpreting your post a bit? If so, I apologize ahead of time. A scorpion will be built. I think I know the sled, and received pics of them today and will be posting them. I can't say that it is the sled because that decision is not mine to make, but would guess it is very likely to be the sled. If this sled is it, the tunnel is found. The hood is being donated. Some pipes are being donated? Well ya see where I am going. A sled is being built. Ya can help, or not. It is happening with members of many forums. Thoughts and suggestions are still open, but part of the goal is to gather a good amount of money for the charity. Currently a 70 Stinger, 71 Super, Brut, and Bullwhip have been mentioned. I don't see it being the Bullwhip. I'd say the 70 Stinger and the 71 Super have the most steam with the Super probably in the lead. Things can change course in a hurry though. If you want a part of that decision you will need to contact Jack (Palo) as he so far has been the kingpin and has been very instrumental in getting the potential donations lined up. My hat is off to Jack for first of all taking the initiative to getting the snowball rolling, and for being willing to do some of the organizing. Admin, if you would wish for this thread to be deleted I will understand. I just brought the information over here because it is Scorpion related. from another Dennis

Here are some pics of the 71 Super Stinger being offered up by "fishbob". It obviously has some issues around the engine mount. I don't see anything that cannot be fixed. The belly has been hit. I see two ways to fix this. One is to cut the area in front of the track out which would enable us to get in the and straighten it, or to cut that part out of two sleds and weld in the patch from a donor sled. I don't know if this area is the same between a 15 inch and a 18 inch or not but would suspect that a 15 inch could be made to work if a 18 inch donor could not be found. I think I have a 15 inch donor. Other than that it looks straight and very solid. No major rust above the seat. Fishbob, even if your chassis is not used, thank you for offering.

Team, Looks like plenty of leadership and donors are already inline. Off to a good start.
We can follow the vintagesleds thread and feel free to bring over information if you have time, especially requests for needed parts.
As you know, we have some key Scorpion people on this board, and some are also members of vintagesleds.com

Well it looks like there will be two builds. It took a bit of a twist from where I thought it was going to go.
The Brut build is a go. Stigmen is spearheading this team and is located by Cambridge MN.
Jack is also willing to head up a Scorpion build. The 71 Super Stinger is stalled at the moment lacking an engine, so a different sled is being considered. We thought we had a engine located but it turned out to be incorrect.
Jack is near menagah MN. (speeling?) All suggestions/donations/assistance welcome.

I think the easiest way to build a 1971 Super Stinger would be with a CCW Fan Cooled modified with the original Scorpion Factory Mods. This would be with the fan housing cut off (a Free Air engine) with twin HR carbs, and Y-pipe with single exhaust pipe (expansion chamber). This could be built to look like an original 340 racer. It could use 440 cylinders and heads. I would guess that a CCW could be purchased for a song and a dance (Can any of us sing and dance?). To make the thing really fly we could get the latest CCW/Kioritz 440 cylinders (with the best porting). Use a twin HR carb manifold with a balance tube. My preference would be to give away the sled with an additional dual inlet Donaldson muffler that the new owner could install instead of the loud pipe. We could also include a fan and shrouding for the new owner to convert it back to fan cooled if they wanted. Anyone on board with me?

I suggest a CCW Kioritz KEC 440/5 engine for the Super Stinger. This was the last design piston ported (not reed valve) engine made by Kioritz (sold by CCW) and was installed into John Deere snowmobiles in 1974 and 1975. It looks (externally) identical to the original Scorpion 340 CCW motor except it has the best ports and has a 30 MM crankshaft clutch taper. I was working as a snowmobile mechanic for a JD dealer back then and we found out it was a very powerfull piston ported engine. This should make the Super Stinger look original and make it fly!

I believe the standard John Deere 600 (wide track).

I just purchased a CCW 440 for the purpose of donating it to the Super Stinger Charity build. Check it out on E-Bay. Listing number 360445953851. Hopefully we can make this engine look like an original "Scorpion modified" free air engine. It will need a cut-down fan shroud, recoil and ignition system.
If Jack wants to use it on his 1971 Super Stinger charity build that is fine. Otherwise I am sure I can resell it. Dennis Moore 626-357-3573

I talked to Jack tonight and it looks like we will be doing a 70 Stinger with a 440 Sachs, not the 71 Super Stinger.
I will post more after Jack Posts that this is a definite plan.
I'll be posting some info soon.

Please note that now that we are in the build stage, we are moving things to one single thread in the restoration section.
Just to reaffirm, we are building a 70 Stinger with a 634 conversion.
I will post names of people who make donations in a separate post so as to keep things in order and not confuse this post.
The 634 has been donated and so has rebuilding of the engine.
We have two different tunnels, one for use of the tunnel and one for the necessary parts to do the conversion. Painting, blasting and body work along with paint and supplies are already handled.
The track is absolutely perfect. This was a very nice PLUS.
Most items actually came apart without breaking or a lot of undesirable language. I think this sled is very low mileage AND had been kept inside.
We are looking for some donations of either NOS, or VERY nice parts or cash donations to accomplish our goal of having a very nice sled for the charity build. We have had some very awesome predecessors that have set a very high bar for us to meet.
What we need. 2 Chrome Scorpion emblems 2 Hood ventsFound Windshield strap Windshield Found Front Bumper Rear Bumper 6 Red Cap Nuts 6 Bumper bolts Hood Hinge 15 bogie wheels 2 ski spindles (Rubber mounted style) Handle Bars w/throttle/brake levers throttle/brake levers found! Rear Idlers 5/8 diam Seat Snow Flap Steering Arms 2 Steering ends Main steering arm One aluminum bogie shaft Jack, please check dimensions. We may have found this! Rear track adjuster brackets Drive Sprockets I guess this is a 70 Stinger only application. 9 tooth driver, 2.0 pitch. The NOS ones we have found so far are also cracked. Does anyone know of a source? If not we will have to go with a different track. Please help out if you have any information Driver Bearings Found Chain Case Plugs Dip Stick Ignition Switch Handle bar grips 634 Gears (we need to find out what gearing would have been) Dan, would you chance know what this would be? ( I received information that this would be 18-32) Throttle cable for 634 application Found Correct 634 airbox. We do not know what this would be. Dan could you post a picture? Decal Set Drive Belt Found Brake Shoe Hirth Wire Harness Tail light Hood closure straps Found! 634 engine plate and mount straps Engine Plate being fabricated! Ski's Found 2 634 pistons Carburetor found 634 Hirth Exhaust manifold
I know this is quite a laundry list. We also know that Jack has some of this stuff, but we cannot expect him to supply it all. We would like donations and we can look to Jack for items that we don't get through other sources. Parts and monetary donations can be sent to Jack's. I will get that info from Jack and make it available.
Thanks for any assistance that you can round up.
