Hello to All
I am new to snowmobiling and to this site - purchased a 73 SuperStinger 440 recently and it runs surprisingly well. I have two concerns at this point and want suggestions on dealing with them:
1 - there is no air filter on the carb. I would think one is necessary but I was told by the seller that they dont need them.
2 - there is no belt on the cooling fan. I haven't been able to find a source for these belts and if I did I wouldn't know what to ask for since I have no belt ID numbers or anything.
Thanks Guys!!

Here's a parts manual, www.vintagesnow.com/Scorpion_files/1973_PM.pdfI like to use an air filter to keep gas from spraying on my crotch. Although, the purpose is to keep debris out of the engine. You will get different opinions from different people. If you can afford one, go ahead and get one. You probably have the Walbro WD size carburetor. The other popular large carburetor is the Tillotson HD. You can ask around for the original air cleaner or just get a generic unit. Here's an air cleaner that will fit both of those, www.ebay.com/itm/WALBRO-TILLOTSON-HD-WD-CARBURETOR-AIR-FILTER-HORN-/170486269638?pt=Snowmobile_Parts_Accessories&hash=item27b1c606c6If you don't use eBay, you can search and find this same economical air cleaner elsewhere online. It will bolt on with three short 1/4"x20 bolts that are easy to find in any hardware/auto parts store. As a side note, there is a smaller size carburetor series, the Walbro WR or Tillotson HR. These take a smaller air cleaner. I doubt you have this smaller carb since you have a 440.

You should replace the fan belt. With the engine turned OFF, try to spin the fan to see if it turns freely. If it does not, the bearing may be seized and that's why the fan belt is missing. If the fan spins free, order and install a belt. Get the numbers off the ID tag of the engine. You probably have a JLO/Rockwell engine. Get the part numbers from it and search for a fan belt. For example, if you have the JLO engine, this might fit but be sure to match your model number, www.ebay.com/itm/Axial-Fan-Belt-for-Scorpion-JLO-OEM-002-42-17-508-/290513333735?pt=Snowmobile_Parts_Accessories&hash=item43a3f1ade7&vxp=mtrJust type your engine make and model and the words fan belt into a search engine and you will find the right belt. If you don't have a JLO, you might have a Sachs or CCW. The fan blows air through the fins in your cylinders to dissipate the heat created by your engine running. You need this fan belt or the engine may very well overheat and cause substantial damage.

Thank you for your advice.
After testing to determine if the fan would spin freely, I found a source for the belt on ebay. Received the belt and installed it without any problems. Also salvaged an old air filter from a small dirtbike - just need to drill out two of the three screws on the Walbro carb attached to the Rockwell 440. Should be ready to go after that. Have already cleaned out the tank and reinstalled it.
I noticed that it doesn't have a primer bulb on it so I may put one of those on the gas line to help with getting gas into the carb after it sits a while.
Again, thanks for the advice - I am looking forward to taking this old girl out this winter.

One more thing I did not mention. Make sure the fan does not woble to ensure the bearing is good.
Are you drilling the carb or the air cleaner to make it fit? I would suggest drilling the air cleaner!
