I often see ads for various tracks from other models such as Mercury, Chaparrel, that say the track will also fit a Scorpion.
The length, width, and "pitch" might be listed if we're lucky.
If we knew what the length, width, and pitch of our Scorpion tracks are, that might help us find replacement tracks.
For example, what is the length, width, pitch of a 1971 Scorpion Stinger II 15" and Stinger III 18" track?

Please describe what the pitch is and how you would determine what the pitch is of any given track.

Please describe what the pitch is and how you would determine what the pitch is of any given track. Once you know how, length and pitch are easy to determine. Pitch: Measure the distance from center to center between the drive lugs. 2.52 and 3.29 are two common scorpion drive pitches. Length: Count the number of drive lugs and multiply it by the pitch. From 1975 on up: Whips / TK's / Range Whips - 118.44 in length, 3.29 drive pitch - 36 lugs 1979 - 1981 Stings - 115.15 in length, 3.29 drive pitch - 35 lugs Lil Whips - 2.52 drive pitch, I think 103.32 in length and I think 41 drive lugs UPDATE, My math was off. 47 lugs is correct. I am suprised someone picked up a scorp track thinking it was JD. Usually its the other way around.

The steel tunnel stinger II's and SuperStingers with bogey and pararail should be 15 X 118 2.52 pitch and I believe that is 54 drive lugs. Many bogey sleds used this style track.
The 71 Stinger II's that I have, both have had a 15 X 118 with a 2" pitch. I have since changed one of them out to the later track and drivers due to availability of the 2" driver.
I belive all the stinger III's were 18 X 126 with 2.52 pitch. To my knowledge, this is the only sled that used this length track.

Thanks stinger440 ! I just found this track for sale on eBay. I'll paste the information here for future reference but I cannot confirm if it's all accurate. A part number (maybe) of 035505 appears on the track, Pictured here is a very rare track that was very popular in the 1970's. This track was removed from a Scorpion Snowmobile but will fit many models snowmobile of the '70's. This track is what was known as a Poly Track, it was made mostly of polyurethane and is an internal drive lug track (no sprocket holes in track. The Track dimensions are as follows: Width-15 in. the length is 117.5 in. (118.0 in.) the sprocket pitch is 2.50 and has 47 pitches, the slide centers are 8-7/8 in. This track will also fit the following sleds listed in an old catalog dated 1982. Alouette Super Brute-1974, Bolens Sprint 440-1971-72, Chaperral all 15in. track-1972-73, Columbia-all15 in. except Trackmaster, Evinrude Skimmer, Herters all 15 in. track, John Deere 300,400,500,and 800-1971-1977 and JD295S 1974, Johnson JX15 in., Mercury Max, Rol-o-Flex all 15 in. track, Rupp Sport 1976, Scorpion all 15 in, track 1971-75. cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=150943767703&ssPageName=ADME:B:SS:US:1123CLICK THE PHOTO BELOW TO ENLARGE, Attachments:

I was told it was a JD 600 track and never unrolled it and when I got it hope I found I was misinformed. There is no numbers on the track just Scorpion molded into it. The dimensions are.. 126 x 17.5 2.52 pitch solid rubber track with a 9.75 center to center on the drivers. Any help will be appreciated. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Title: Re: Scorpion track id Post by: yesterdays wine on September 03, 2011, 04:06:01 AM all thru 72 with a widetrack Title: Re: Scorpion track id Post by: Hurricane_72 on September 03, 2011, 08:13:38 AM So that would be 1967 Mark IV 1968 Mark III 1969 Mark III 1970 Mark III 1971 Stinger III 1972 Stinger I Stinger III Super Stinger III ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Title: Re: Scorpion track id Post by: yesterdays wine on September 03, 2011, 10:12:50 AM my book dose not list them all, under scorpion it gives the dimensions you give and reads (all thru 1972) Title: Re: Scorpion track id Post by: Hurricane_72 on September 03, 2011, 10:29:49 AM I took those models off of Davids site. I just went with all the 18" tracks 72 and before, I was more wondering if the first 18" tracks were different. What's a fair price on this track, I got it in a larger package deal so there was no real price on it.l Title: Re: Scorpion track id Post by: stinger440 on September 03, 2011, 10:49:18 AM I believe the 1970 and earlier scorps used the sprocket drive track that rotted out. With a change of idlers, bogeys and drive sprockets you can switch over to the involute drive. So technically only the 71 and 72s ran this track "stock". Title: Re: Scorpion track id Post by: ddub on September 03, 2011, 11:03:55 AM Quote from: Hurricane_72 on September 03, 2011, 08:13:38 AM So that would be 1967 Mark IV 1968 Mark III 1969 Mark III 1970 Mark III 1971 Stinger III 1972 Stinger I Stinger III Super Stinger III This is an internal drive track. Correct? 67-69 were external drive tracks. Very thick heavy rubber with holes for the drive cogs. I am not aware of a 67 widetrack. 70 I think is a mixed bag depending on model. I think most were the old style track. Maybe someone with more experience on 70's can chime in. 71 started the new polyurethane style track which seem to have held up over time a lot better than the early tracks. So it might be for a 71-2 widetrack with bogies. Possibility it could be a 1973 or newer track for the pararail. If there are any numbers on the track it might help. Or some pics and exact measurements of the drive cogs. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Title: Re: Scorpion track id Post by: Hurricane_72 on September 03, 2011, 05:39:23 PM There are no numbers on the track only the scorpion name. Here are a few pics i270.photobucket.com/albums/jj117/S_kyle/scorpion%20track/scorpiontrack005.jpg [/img] ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Title: Re: Scorpion track id Post by: ddub on September 03, 2011, 07:04:52 PM definitely not the older track. I will try and look at the ones I have and compare. It might take a few days or maybe even more as I am kind of behind loading up for haydays. Gotta load up all those sinks, washers, etc. ya know. What was the length of the 1970 Stinger track? Did it fit any other years/models/makes?
I have a Massey track that looks similar. It has 58 lugs. Just over a 2 inch pitch.

Part of the track blew off of my 1979 Sting 440. My lugs are 3.29" center to center, as listed above, but I only have 45 lugs. Was mine not correct for this machine? Does anyone make replacement tracks like this? Gary

I think you need to re count the lugs. Should be 35 lugs. 45 would mean you have a 148 inch track in your sting 😃

You are correct...35 lugs! I put a piece of tape in every 10th lug, but I numbered them from 1 instead of zero! So much for my great idea! Will start looking for a track now. Gary
