say for instance when timing is to be set at .010-.014 BTDC. is this when the point just begins to open? or when it is at is peak open position? (which would be where the point gap is set).and rather than looking at it to see where its at. isn't there a tool that works better?

On the Cuyuna's we take the cam piece (center of the flywheel) out of junk flywheel and set it to .014 when fully open. That is just point gap, not timing. Timing is setting "when" the points open and that is set precisely when they start to open. You need a continuity tester for that.

I get it. center piece of flywheel will open points and make easier to adjust. good idea! so I was always wrong on the timing. I thought it was fully open. now I understand. with a tester it will let me know exactly when point begins to open. correct? and what do I connect the tester to?

correct. the ground of the tester goes to ground somewhere. The power lead goes to the power wire from the points. Normally these will be one of the black wires running to the 6 wire main harness connector.
I always end up trying both to find which one is PTO versus Mag side.

sounds good. blindfold? no problem. as long as I can see the green go light and the finish line! picked up a good donor motor this weekend. pararailer has a good blue hood for it. I heard blue is faster!
