Due to some technical difficulties I need to temporarily install a 1979 400 where a 440 used to live .I was thinking of dropping the main jet 3 sizes and drop the needle 1 position So she wont be slobbering too rich what do you guys think / Do you think I should drop the main any further? orthe needle for that matter?

Assuming that you have the Sting pipe, leave it jetted the same as the 440 and run it.
If you look at all the clutching and carbs that Scorpion used, they pretty much treated the 440 and 400 the same as long as the exhaust was the same. Example, 1979 Sting 400 and 1979 Whip 440. Same pipe, same clutch settings, same carb.
Tweak the needle if you run it and it seems fat, but I definitely wouldn't jet it leaner to start.

This actually is a sled I am building the exhaust is the whip/400 exhaust. Can't seem to find the sting/tk 440 exhaust here in sw ontario .Anybody have any of the exhaust I need? ;D

You may have to jet it down with the whip exhaust. I would start it as is and see how it works. It will likely be a little rich, but you can jet down based on plug color.
