At the risk of over-analyzing a non-issue, here I go... I see the plastic air boxes on the old Scorpions. Some are like this on a Tillotson HR carb, There are larger models that are Sachs branded for HD carbs. I think the factory installation has the intake hole as the lower hole while the upper hole in the air box bolts to the carb. However, I see other photos where the air box is "upside down" so the intake hole is above the carb. Sometimes I think it's because the seat is in the way so you cannot mount the air box with the intake hole down... I haven't seen any of these air boxes with filters, although you can hose clamp some air filter foam over the intake hole. So...questions are: Does it really matter what way the air box is bolted on? If the intake hole is low, it could take in snow that builds up in front of the seat. If the intake hole is high, it could suck in snow flying over the hood. I told you guys this would be over-analyzing. Any thoughts or history on this minor detail?

The thing I like about these air boxes over the standard air horn is these boxes keep the gas spray off your crotch! Now that I wrote that, perhaps you want the intake hole in the down position so the gas will run out of it onto your sled instead building up inside the air box and flooding the engine! I know that is far fetched but what the heck. One more thing. How much "spray" out of the carb onto your crotch is normal, and what would be causes of a lot (or too much)spray out of the carb while the engine is running?

Here's a funny sachs air box story. Last july while getting ready for a grass race i had the air box on the seat. A plastic tie strap i cut off the fuel fell into air box and i didnt see it. So when i was done doing what i was doing i put on the air box. Started engine, stabbed the throttle and watched the 340ss stinger slam into my 16' insulated garage door! Yep, door was junk. After dust settled, i found that the tie strap was stuck under throttle butterfly. No damage to sled though. The door company from a southern state thought it was quite funny that in july someone would run a snowmobile through a garage door. They said only in wisconsin!! Always put on the tether cord now!!

obj1, that there is funny stuff. I don't care who you are. Just glad no one was hurt.
Yep, stuff can happen all the time. Last summer I dumped my bike doing about 10 MPH on gravel. I was just going to my shop and the front brake locked up. No jacket, no helmet. Bike is still scared, so is my arm! LOL

I do not know. But, I believe they go down. I know Ski-Doo's went down. Probably so fuel could drain out.
Yes, I think the airbox would be a better deal than the airhorn. I remember as a kid driving the 69 all of a sudden "booooooooog" goes the engine. Oppps, pull snowmobile suit away from carb, and away the 290 went again.

you know. . . I had a similar experience with a brand new 2001 Arctic Cat ZR600 I bought. 10 miles into the first ride, the throttle seemed "weird". I was in a ditch and stabbed the throttle wide open and it just stayed there. I hit an approach before I could pull myself back forward and hit the kill switch. Cleared the approach by a very long ways. I didn't crash, but the motor blew up.
Turns out someone (Cat or mikuni) got forgot to correctly install some keeper inside the carb. Parts of it stuck the carb and parts got sucked into the motor. Still the furthest I've ever flown on a sled.
Dealer fixed everything no cost. I always wondered if I crashed in the process if they'd have fixed that too ;D
