I have four of these Sleds getting ready to buy another but my question is what was the difference in the 73s that had flat hoods in front with vents on the sides versus the ones with no vents on the sides and big squared black vents on the front of hood?

1973 was not a good year for Scorpion. The snowmobile industry decided to reduce the total noise level of each new 1973 snowmobile. To meet the lower noise levels the Scorpion engines were fully enclosed with an engine shroud. Noise matting was glued to the inside of the engine shroud, the exhaust exited into the tunnel above the track and the carburetor was fitted with a restrictive air silencer.
The engines ran very warm and the clutches suffered from the excess heat.
To make matters worse, the other snowmobile manufacturers didn't comply with the new noise reduction standards.
Midway through the season Scorpion sent to all of its dealers a warranty repair kit that consisted (mainly) of new clutch parts, a heat shield to be installed between the engine and the carburetor and two air vents to be installed into the hood. The vents worked well in cooling the engine and the clutch.
1973 was not a great sales year for Scorpion and they had many sleds still in stock after the season was over. The leftover sleds were fitted with a new hood (with vents), the shield and the new clutch parts. The new hood had a wide black stripe up the center and no vents on the side. Installing a new hood was probably easier than cutting holes in all of the original hoods and installing the vents.
These were sold as 1974's but were really just reworked 1973's. These reworked 1973's were known simply as "1974 Stingers". The "new for 1974" sleds were called "1974 Super Stingers" The "Stingers" were sold at extremely low prices and were mostly sold out by the fall of 1973.

Ok that makes sense my white one I gutted the air box out but put all the shrouds back on to keep original cuz it only has 365 miles on it. I have a 400 rv that has black strip n front vents was just wondering cuz date on tunnel showed 73. And I was gonna puck up a stinger 290 with the big strip n vents and was just wondering cuz I was trying to stick with all 73 models. Thanks for reply.
