Well, I got to installing my extra hood guide. I moved the RH guide that was there up as well. This made a big difference with how the hood fit on that side. It sits down further in the guide in the back. It isn't perfect but I am much more confident it will stay in place in the back now. The extra guide in the front made the hood sit down nicer and follow the bumper better. So much so, I decided to put on on the other side as well. Right side Left side Fits good enough for me !!!

The whole reason for the hood guide work was to get the exhaust clearance on the hood. I also had to fabricate a way to hood up the spring to hold down on the bracket in the front since the spring wouldn't fit by the hood. I used some wire loops I had around and cut off a piece to use by the hood. Then I shortened the spring that was originally used. I didn't like the spring rubbing against the wrap on the pipe, so I cut a piece of aluminum from my old race car aluminum I still had and put that underneath. Everything fit nicely. The hood closed with clearance. This is the sturdiest exhaust setup I've ever had on one of these scorps. I like it. I then put the airbox in place and hooked everything up And then it dawned on me. . . . . . . . . I am really getting close to being done !! I still need to come up with a rear bumper and have the seat covered. But other than that, it is mostly small things like setting track tension and aligning ski's Not sure about the LED lights I had planned. I would like to do it, but I am not sure I'll get that done. At least not right now. I also might order some padded aluminized material and stick it to the hood by the exhaust. Just to make sure it doesn't bake the hood. I would hate to cook this hood. I may also wrap the starting part of the pipe if it seems too hot by the belly pan. I don't know if wrapping the rest of the pipe is going to make it hotter in the unwrapped portions of the pipe or not. I also need to get some Av Gas and get the engine running. . . .

Turns out I had some of the heat shielding I needed left from back when we raced cars. And I know it works well as we pretty much blew hot exhaust on it there. It also deadens sound quite a bit as we used it to keep from having to put mufflers on our modified. It is also pretty inexpensive. It is pretty simple aluminum on one side, some sort of fiberish, clothish backing. I had some of the "high temp" spray on adhesive left. Smells like contact cement to me. I decided to line the plastic belly pan around the bottom of the pipe first. Of course, this meant pulling the pipe out for the 2,436,967th time. Then I put some on the hood around the primary part of the pipe This is what it looks like with the hood closed. Should protect this part of the hood. This stuff works great. Very easy to work with and is about 3/8" thick. I highly recommend it. The adhesive is in a spray can and the thing kept clogging the tip. It is 5 years old, so that may have something to do with it. I also spent some time looking at the first bend in the pipe that I didn't wrap. Now there is two layers of steel there as we basically just welded another piece over the top of the pipe there on the top and bottom. They crack there and this is the best way we have found to fix it. But it does run close enough to the hood and the belly pan there I am a little concerned. With the rest of the pipe wrapped, I suspect this may run a little hotter here and at the very end of the pipe. The end will only cook my foot, this might melt the belly pan, the little grill in the hood, or the hood itself there. I could wrap it, but on top of being a pain with that sharp bend, i assume I need to give the thing somewhere to get rid of some heat. and it is pretty open here, so that seems like a good spot. I have my 79 Sting sitting right there and and that has this same pipe with the original Scorpion fiberglass with aluminum shield on it and I looked it over good. It is covered to the same exact point that I wrapped this one and it didn't melt the grill, so maybe this will be ok. I might put some of this insulation stuff on the belly pan under the pipe and I am considering taking the plastic vent that is there out as that is an NOS piece and I would be better to save it for someone doing a restore. I can't use the aluminum honeycomb stuff I used on the vents by my knees as it isn't wide enough. I could use the stainless stuff I have, but I'd have to figure out a way to mount it as it has a lot bigger holes in it. Plus I still need something over the top. If I can find an old vent with the fins all broken but the plastic could, I could wet sand that and use that. On the plus side, I did manage to straighten out a rear bumper to use. Now I just have to figure out how I am going to re-enforce it to the tunnel. I have a couple ideas.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone !! I decided I was going to remove the grill and front of the headlight and fab up something else so I didn't melt it. This is the grill that was there, after I very carefully drilled out the rivets and removed it. I now have a NOS takeoff. These are the parts I made to replace it. I took an old grill I had and hand cut the entire center out and cleaned it up. That was quite time consuming, but I got what I wanted. The red piece is some old race car aluminum I cut out to use as a backer since I can't rivet the grating as it has way to big of openings. I also took a couple of the old faded Scorpion bug logos that go in the grill and took the aluminum polish to it just to see what happened. I wound up with this looked kinda cool, and gave me the idea I could color the bug and outline black and I'd basically have the reverse of what Scorpion originally had. So I took colored in the bug with a black sharpie. I wondered what it would look like on the dash. This is how it would look. If I don't find a CHT gauge for this to put there, I may put one of these one that spot instead. I have a few smaller pieces of the aluminum covered padding left, so I added a little more to a few key areas. The belly pan under the exhaust The bottom of the airbox which as you can see in the first pick had been melted before. I figure if it gets hot enough to melt the plastic on the inside, the incoming airflow probably gets warmed up too. Padding installed. I also decided to add some aluminum "foil" type tape to areas I didn't put the thick aluminum covered padding. I "think" I have done all I can to keep the exhaust from baking anything under the hood. Doesn't mean it won't, but I tried. As you can see, pretty much everything around the pipe is now covered with some sort of protection. No doubt there is a little overkill here, but since I had the stuff I used it. I was planning on painting the piece of aluminum that goes under the grill I am replacing, but it is too cold to paint now and I got the idea to cover it with the aluminum heat tape. I "trial" installed the grill and this is what it is kinda going to look like. It is going to be a pain to install I think as I need to line things up before I rivet it in place. And the openings are big, so it can move around a bit. "stock" Looks kinda cool I guess. Some may like the stock way better, I kinda like this. If I were deciding what to put in there and ordering it, I would have used something with smaller holes so I didn't have to build the backer plate. It shouldn't melt though as it is stainless steel and everything around it has been protected with some aluminum foil I apologize if I put to many pics or got to wordy, but I heard Indy likes pics and I like it when people tell the story of how they got to the finished product. If you've been following this post, you know a lot changed with this as it went along and many ideas came up on the fly. Hope everyone has a great turkey day !!

I haven't had a lot of time to work on this as the Stinger Build has priority right now. But I did do a few things. I got my bug logo's painted. Took some messing around. Masking them off proved to be a pain in the arse. The easiest way I found was to paint the whole thing and use an Exacto knife to scrape the paint off the raised portions. Neither are perfect, but they are pretty good. The black one is going in the grill on the front, the blue "metal flake" one is going on the dash. Next chance I get, the grill is ready to be riveted to the hood. I put the ski's completely together. Someone had drilled the threads out of the ski saddles on this springs. That made it a bit sloppy. I wanted to take the slop out of the spindles and the bolts. So, I drilled out the hole in the spindle and the ski's out to take a 10mm bolt instead of a 3/8. The metric bolt I used had a much beefier head and lock nut too. This tightened the ski's up nicely. Top is the metric, bottom the SAE I also finally set the track tension. I have no idea what I "should" set it at with this setup, but the Scorpion track with this skid was supposed to be 1 1/8" This is rubber track that hasn't been on a sled for a while and I want to make sure it doesn't wander. So I set it at 1" using the Scorpion "Track Jacks". For those who haven't used these, they make setting tension super simple. They are simply two pieces threaded together, one of which has a spring in it for the right tension. You just adjust it to the height you want and put one on both sides. You adjust the tension bolts and once the green line lines up, on both sides, you are done.

Ok, getting close to running this thing the first time. I installed the grill today. Not much to explain, just some pics. This one just looks cool to me with all the shine and reflection Put the exhaust and air box back in. Hopefully for the last time. I probably should have set toe before putting that all back in, but I'll figure it out. Heat shielding appears to be in the right place. I have Halogen headlights for the later Scorpions, but the 75 -76 whips take a different headlight assembly and bulb. 75-76 Whip setup 77 and up style I decided I wanted a halogen bulb, so I cut the ears off the halogen bulb. It doesn't sit down in the headlight like the original did, but by eliminating the o-ring I could thread the plastic piece on which holds it in place. Since the later ones weren't sealed, I think this should be OK. If not, I kept the old setup and can put that back in if need be. Wiring is connected and tie wrapped out of the way of the exhaust when the hood is open and closed. If you followed this post from the beginning, you know I wanted to put some LED lighting in the bumper in place of trim. With everything else going on and with snow "hopefully" just around the corner, I don't think I am going to get to that. So, I have explored some different options like reflective tape, pinstripes, etc. The trim I have for this is for the Stings and has a red stripe through it. So I reversed it. I kinda like it just black like this. I might just leave it like this. I do have some of the aluminum decals that were originally on the front of the 75 whips. I might put one on the front and one under the whip emblem on each side. Once I get it outside, I'll try them and see how they look on the sled. I need to go through my TODO list, but the bumper and the seat are the two major items left to do. Set toe, Run engine, sort out jetting, polish everything up one last time, put bug logo on dash. . . Small things :-)

I have two yellow two black and one red going to the dash area. Thank you for your help. I'll snap a couple pics if I can get to the wires. Do you have the connection to the switch, or just the rectangular main engine connector ? I'll take some pics this afternoon. If you need a switch, let me know, I think I have a couple NOS ones left.

Thanks Stinger, I can honestly say if I ever sell this, someone better snap it up as it has had a TON of attention to detail. Of course, I don't plan to sell it anytime soon as it should be a really nice trail sled !! And unique too !

Thanks for the reply, the last owner of the sled just cut the wires. I do not have the plug or switch. I would very much like to buy a NOS switch from you. I'm sure I could just put spade terminals on the wires and hook up to the switch if I knew the correct pattern .I got the sled for 50 $ and aside from the missing switch and needing a new seat it's in great shape. I already have Mikuni on the way too. Thanks again for your help.

Now that the Make a Wish sled is complete I finished this sled. Everything is pretty much done on this sled except the snow flap. Still waiting for that to arrive. Had it out, made a couple jetting runs, mag side is a little lean, PTO good. Gonna put a different needle in and see what that does. A few pics I re-enforced the rear bumper mount. These like to bend the bumper or worse yet crack the tunnel where they mount over time. This should fix it. I just used the spot the pararail skid would have mounted originally. Seat is installed. I also put the Scorpion bug logo on the dash plate. It is impossible to get a good pic with the shiny dash, best I could do. Finally put the Scorpion emblem on the front. I'll get complete pics once we get some snow again and I get the snow flap. It's going to the Scorpion Homecoming, so that snowflap better get here quick.

That is really nice scorp11. Thanks !! Now that it is pretty much done, I can say . . . . This is one nice sled. It is unique and I did a lot of little details to it that make it cool. It isn't a race sled, but should be a good rider. I'll post the final pics when I get the snowflap on and get it outside. If you come to the Scorpion homecoming, it'll be there. It'll be interesting to see how many people notice its not your standard run of the mill Whip !! For those who don't know. . . Customs are much more fun than Restorations !!
