WOW!!! Very nice work. Those Rupp gauges look nice. I think custom sleds are the thing of the future, you've got a sled that no one else has. Great job. I've got some Rupps if you want to try your hand at making some customs!

Finally got this sled out for a little riding on Saturday. Wound up putting 80 miles on it on it's maiden voyage. My speedo reads a little low. I figured it might with the sprockets being a little larger than the stock Scorpion ones. My speedo said 76 miles, my uncles 80 for the day.
This is the nicest riding Scorp I've had. Handled the rough stuff as good as I can expect a leafer to. I suspect the newer seat helps too. It is stable and turns good. The rear suspension mod I made helps a lot with ski pressure.
It ran pretty good, but I either need to lean it out or change the clutching. It likes to fall flat on it's face getting on it from a dead stop or low RPM if you get on it hard. At any kind of speed it was fine.
Turned plenty of RPM already, so I don't want to lighten the weight arms. I think I'll change jetting first.
We plan to run again Thursday, weather permitting.
One thing I did learn is that I now have foot warmers. I wondered with the end of the pipe being the only thing I didn't wrap if it might get warm there, and it does. Don't have to worry about cold feet riding this one !!

Hey Scorp, did you have to use a spacer or anything for the silent top gear to fit properly? Also do you know what length chain you used?

Hey Scorp, did you have to use a spacer or anything for the silent top gear to fit properly? Also do you know what length chain you used? Yes, I used some AN washers to space out the gears both top and bottom so they lined up. The bottom I just spaced out so the chain cleared everything, then I shimmed the top to match. If memory serves me the chain was 86 or 88. It fit pretty snug and I only used one tensioner on it. I'll see if I can find any notes on it. Once the season is done, I plan to pull the cover and see what it looks like in there, so I can tell you then if I don't find notes.

I've been out on 3 separate rides now with this sled. My Rev woulda been a better sled to ride today. Today was terrible rough, but we still got 70 miles in. Speedo now reads as below I'm close on jetting for the carb, but it still has low end bog if I get hard on the throttle from a stop. Other than that the motor runs great. Still can't figure out why the PTO side reads richer on the plugs than the mag when it has a single carb. Only thing I can think is the colder plug on that side. The track likes to slap the tunnel in bumps on deceleration about a foot back from the drive sprockets. I put the smaller wheels up top in back. I think part of it is the fact that the larger drive sprockets puts the track closer to the tunnel. Before we go out next time, I'm going to tighten the track up some more and see if that helps.

Since the motor broke on this our last ride, I decided to do a post season check up on this sled. Considering I put the entire thing together from nothing, it really didn't have much for issues. I had to keep tightening up this track to keep it from slapping the tunnel. 3/4" at 10 pounds of pressure seems to be what it took. I never did get the jetting perfect, but I didn't want to get too lean while trying to ride as much as possible. I think what I need to do is go to a 6DH3 needle or probably more likely to a P8 Needle Jet instead of Q0. The P8 is about .010 smaller (leaner). That is what the powerjets had in them with a 6dh4 needle. I got just shy of 400 miles on the sled. Every ride was 60 - 90 miles except for the last one. On that one, about 25 miles in, I stopped at an intersection in the trail and shut the sled off. It made a funny pop just before it was off and wouldn't re-start. When it cooled down, it eventually started and I rode it about 100 yards to the road where we loaded it. I tore it apart today. The PTO side piston had two broken rings. After tearing it down, I think I learned what went wrong. Looks like a wrist pin clip broke. That caused the rings to break. Found this on the PTO side piston, exactly where both rings broke. Note the broken wrist pin clip. There is damage there as well. Directly below where something went through the piston and where the rings broke. Also, looking at the picture of the piston, it sure looks like the second ring had some blow by for a while. It looks like perhaps the second ring was broken and floating around in there for a little while due to shiny spot rubbed through the dis-coloration. The bottom end looked like this. The longer piece you see in there looks to be part of a ring that has been down there banging around for a while. It could be the circlip end, but it looks like a cast piece. It is about half the size it woulda been were a ring part and were it where it belonged. The rod bearing got a little toasty too. It was a little gummy there, which I assume is due to excess heat from the blow by of the broken rings. Pics of the top of both pistons PTO Mag At least I feel better about not having messed it up when I put it together. I liked those style clips for assembly, but I don't like them anymore.

Since this motor suffered a terminal failure, I need to build one up for it. Easy path is to just build another Cuyuna as it performed great. But, my original intent had been to put something different (originally a sachs 440) in it. So, I thought I'd do a little fishing for ideas. Parameters: - Close to the power of the Cuyuna in it with the Sting pipe. around 48 hp give or take.
- Must fit obviously. I don't think I can fit a straight dual carb setup in there or dual pipes. Ideally I'd use the pipe that is in it now as it is a pretty good flowing pipe.
- Reliable motor. Don't want anything finicky.
- Not cost an arm and a leg, and I must be able to find parts.
- Fan cooled. Not cutting holes in that hood or putting in all the cooling stuff right now. Liquid cooling is appealing, but that is a much bigger project.
My first idea was a Sachs 440C. With the Sting pipe, it should be close to the Cuyuna that was in it. Maybe a little less, but that's ok. If I can ever get that pararailer guy to cough one of his 15 up, this is the preferred option ;D A Polaris 488 out of an indy trail is appealing, but I'm not sure it would fit. I'd need to know how tall it is and I am not sure if they made them with single carbs. Don't think dual carbs would clear the secondary. So, throw out your ideas.

You put a polaris engine in it or any "off brand" engine for that matter and fit will hit the shan! You bump your head or what?

Scorpion used Sachs, that should be OK, right ? Pararailer. . . I don't want to get beat up. Cough up a 440C for me I have a nice shiny new windshield for you . . .

Yep, it will be my rider again next year, just need to build a motor up for it I plan to metalflake a plastic hood up with some vents in the front to get some air in. It's still be sparkly, it'll just have a little different look Central MN is where we do most of our riding I'll probably bring it to the Scorpion Homecoming again this year. Bring your TK up for that !!

That sounds like a lot of fun - I grew up around Milaca and then down around Mankato. Thats where I got my first whip. rode the hell outta that thing. My kids do6n't get it yet - - they think its a pile of junkā¦. until I showed them YOURS. and then told them that it was the hottest sled on frozen water back in 76!!!!

ive never riden a blue whip. scorp11's is like no other . definatley the coolest 76 whip ever on this planet. I dont understand why you want to put 440c in it tho? other than the fact it would be custom and very unique. Im sorry I sort of blew off the talk about selling you the 440c extra parts i have, scorp11, I guess I dont want to get rid of anything tillim done with mine. I have put my 440c project on the back burner. I did pull it out of the tote recently and at least made considerations on it! That motor would be cool in any Scorpion but never came in one. You do a great job posting pics on here and your helpful knowledge is very much appreciated. It was fun to see the progress of that one of a kind whip build.

scorp i saw a pretty good looking cuyana 440 in boneyard. carb was gone but both clutches were there. air box was there but kind of sketchy. want me to see what they'd want for it? could pull it over and see if any compression...

I was at a swap this fall and was talking to some 18 yr old guys that were selling a very nice ski roule. It had a good running 440c in it (started right up). They wanted like 400 or something for the whole sled. I told them I would give em 200 for just the engine! They almost went for it, but then decided that there dad would be mad if they came home with no motor in his sled!! I think those motors are kind of rare, most had mikuni carbs on them, the heads have smaller chambers, jugs have bigger ports and the case is a little wider that the standard sachs 440. Ive never ran one but have heard that the 5 hp or so more they have is very noticable.

I'm always up for some extra motors, but one like that would be a real crap shoot. Really need a compression gauge to test compression. Can always see what they want for it.

Makes projects more interesting to me if I document them as I go. No worries on the 440C. The whole thing with this sled was for something completely different. I was going to put a plain ol' sa2-440 in it but the extra 5 hp from a C would have made it closer to a Cuyuna on hp. I still would like to do it, but the exhaust mounting is a bit of a problem. I'd have to resolve that before I would move forward with it. Plus, this will be my main rider again this year and a Cuyuna will be the easiest.

Scorp11, How is your Whip doing these days? Doing a lot of resting :-). No snow here. I put a different motor in last year that I revealed and rode it some more. Think it has around 400 miles on it now. Changed the clutching and mostly got rid of the bog but turns 8 grand now :-). So more work their. It will be getting a hood with vents in the front if I ever get and pick up the hood. Also will change clutching back some. But it really is a nice cruising trail sled. Would still like to put a 440c Sachs in it but that may never happen. Especially since I don't have one.
