Ok fella's its been about 20 years since I sold my 79 tkx and 1980 tk, that my wife and I used to bomb around on .Having moved into the independant suspension and many a polaris I have now come full circle. Two years ago I purchased a decent 340 tk that had been neglected for some years and needed much tlc.
My original scorps needed almost no work in the 5-6 years I owned them except oil and gas and they weren't babied either except maybe my wife's .To make a long story short I should have bought another 440 the 340 frustraded the hell out of me for weeks first no spark intermittently .
2 sets of points and a set of crankseals later I had that solved. And then the carb from hell to cover the other couple of weeks .
I found service information was difficult to obtain for this little POS but in 2 more weeks of cleaning reading and adjusting that too was solved.
Then no more season to really test the fruits of my labour .Last year no snow at all here in S.W ontario
This year finally enough snow After some fresh fuel and some choice words the little cuyuna fired up and ran beautifully so out the door with my 17 year old son who is not used to a shallow lug track after getting stuck 3-4 times he seemed unable to get the concept of the shallow track and 10 inches of fresh snow
THIS IS WHERE THE OLD MAN STEPS IN! After telling him to get off then with me driving get on I was going to show him how it was done by being a little more agressive on the throttle and planning more that 10 ft a a time
And so I showed the little pecker how it was done and at the same time running along 3 feet over from where he got stuck .Now comes the part that almost made this story unpublishable .While going through very deep snow with 2 guys on 350-400 lbs total weight the 340 bogged down pretty well and likely would have stalled if we didn't head for a more bare spot at wich time she revved back up and all was fine .The sled worked fine again and my son had a blast with it for hours after
So my question to you guys is did these sleds have a provision for backshifting back then ? I KNOW EVEN A POORLY TUNED OR CLUTCHED SLED OF TODAY WOULD STRUGGLE IN THOSE CONDITIONS ! It makes me wonder if anything can be done or if that is one of those things that was just not dealt with as well in the infancy of sledding ? Btw It felt fantastic to be out on a TK again and I felt like a teenage kid !! The clutches have not been touched that I know of and seem to be fine the sled just doesn't seem to backshift under load
