As mentioned earlier in this thread, production numbers are not available for Scorpion.
Based on my sightings (which is limited), I would say not rare for the 71. However widetracks are generally lower production then narrow tracks.
In 71 the Wedge style was the new chassis that was replacing the bubble nose. It is reported that Scorpion management never liked the Wedge style, and that is why the bubble was also held over into the 71 year. Than the "all new" 72 came in as a replacement. Much needed might I add, as the 71-72 wedge is really just a warmed over bubble. So in 72 the wedge was a lost orphan from what I have gathered.
but I have two of the 71's without even trying to get one. With that said, I wasn't trying to get the 72! LOL
Maybe some others can give you their input.

"Macandg" There was also narrow tracks with this type hood. If you look close in my photo, you can just see 1 behind the wide track.

The '71 wedge style and model has been mentioned as "rare", especially the WT model.
I can't find the source, but I recall reading about the '71 Scorpion "wedge" style hood was actually a quick response to a Chicago Company that didn't meet the deadline to re-design a hood. So with little time to spare, Scorpion put together the wedge style. It lasted only one year.
Like I said- I looked through the trail-a-sled site and the vintage brochure guy, but can't locate it now. I must have found it somewhere, because I made a note in my scorpion"file" as I keep learning more about it.
Anyone else recall? Is this new guy just making stuff up?

Hey "obj1"- I see the other hood in the back of the picture. So, what do you think, is this a mid-year change of hood style? To me, it looks like the fiberglass portion is from '74 and the windshield/light is from '73.
I recall reading the louvers were an after thought and dealers were instructed to install to help cooling. That explains why some louvers are black and some are chrome...right?
Ya know, we must really like this stuff, because this discussion is getting into the geek level now...but that's a good thing.

Both years they offered other versions. I don't know how the 71 wedge could be called rare. I see a LOT more 71 wedges than I see 71 bubbles. I also have 2 71 widetracks, and 2 71 narrow tracks not counting the supers. So, I have found 71 widetracks. I will say, it seems as if the widetrack was becoming less popular industry wide by 73. Probably as sleds went away from the tunnel mount there was less need? Now, I don't see a lot of black wedge style hoods. Somewhere I read that a lot of those went to Canada? Just my take on things and what I have seen. Other areas could easily be different as by what the local dealers pushed. Now 72, I don't see many wedges. I seriously wonder if Scorpion was just burning up inventory. but if you check brochures, they were available.

OBJ, Is the yellow sled in the back a solid color, or is that metal flake?

the wide track wedges were more stable than the 15 inch ones, the bigger track and wider ski stance made a vig difference, we have both, and the 72 WT stinger I is really rare

odj1- that is a nice looking sled indeed. In my looking and reading, I think that model- yellow hood 1973 TK, is among the rare list. If not, I don't care, I still like it. Along with it's white version of SS440 also in 1973. The white is also a solid, non-flake, color But white seems the only color that had a pinstripe around the hood.
Ski Doo must have boiled over when they saw the brawn of Scorpion take their color... Hec, maybe that is what "TK" stands for... "take". (humor intended)

I seriously wonder if Scorpion was just burning up inventory. but if you check brochures, they were available. 72 wedges were carryover inventory from what I was told. And were only available as Stinger I's and Stingeroo's too from what I was told. I had never heard of any wedge style Stinger's in 72, so that would be quite rare from what I know. 71 wedges are all over the place. That was Scorpions top sled in 71' My dad and uncle bought identical 71 Wide tracks. One had a ccw 440 the other a sachs 440. The flipped a coin to see who bought which one. Oddly enough both had steel tanks in them, which I thought only the sachs had. The wide track 440's in 71 were also the only ones that you could "supposedly" get a 440 CCW in. All others were 400 CCW or Sachs. So Dennis, what motor does that sled have ? I was told this had something to do with John Deere's relationship with CCW.

(I don't know how to put an image in...) obj1- my white horse has after market louvers. I'll be recovering the seat this summer. It also needs some spit shine, but I love it. Funny story about this sled. Soon after we got it, while on a trail ride, my wife's sled was acting up so I had her ride this '73 for a bit while I rode her's. At one point she got off, walked up to me and simply said "...I disapprove. That sled is a death trap. You must get rid of it." That's one way of knowing you are loved...

Kevin, That 72 is a 440 sachs. It has a tunnel tank also.
