Hey Guys, New to Scorpions here. Bought a pretty nice 1979 TKX for my son Noah to ride. I've heard that there may have been a update kit to keep the engine cooler that includes the duct work plus a vent that is added below the windshield on the PTO side of the hood. I have 2 quesstions............... Should I try to get one of these kits? Are the kits available? Thanks in advance, Roger

there was a kit that included a plastic duct to direct the air out, a pattern for the hole to cut in the hood and a plastic vent to make the hole not look so ugly. On top of that they boxed in the carb with a special aluminum box as well as a little aluminum box for the fuel pump and the fuel pump was relocated. The jetting on the carb was changed as well. If yours is a 79, your carb will be jetted closer to where they ended up, for some reason in 1980 they really messed up the jetting. Finding a kit will be tough. If your ok with adding vents to the front, I would consider that route. Go here and you will see some underhood pics of the kit pieces installed on an 80. The boxing in of the carb definitely makes it a pain in the arse to work on that. And for what its worth, the back of your paraslide II skid is mounted incorrectly. The flipper goes the other way. It won't ride as well that way. If you want to jack the back end up higher, below is a better way without messing up the rest of the geometry. vintagesleds.com/bs/index.php/topic,58571.msg816545.html#msg816545

Roger, those kits are out there, but you will probably have to find one on a parts sled. Any sort of extra vent in the front or PTO side will help. Just need something to help push the hot air out. And make sure you keep the ductwork installed on the fan side. You must have cool air coming in on the mag side.
Does boxing in the carb really do anything other than make it annoying to work on?

Does boxing in the carb really do anything other than make it annoying to work on? Anything that keeps the carb cool probably helps, but I really don't know. The kit was put out because they had low end bogs, not just because they thought it was too hot under the hood. The kit was called a low end performance kit even. I have a copy of it with all the specs. The 80's had more issue than the 79's. My uncles 79 has about a 4" round speaker vent in the front and he doesn't have bogging issues. But the 79's still have the exhaust shielding and I think that helps. My Custom whip pretty closed off under the hood, and even though I wrapped the pipe, and it has a low end bog. I plan to vent the hood in front to fix it. I could put the shielding around the carb, as I have some, but it really is a pain to jet that way

No vents, no duct work, no BOG.

Thanks to everyone for the advise.
Scorp11,
I wondered if something was amiss on the rear skid as I've never seen one that sat that "tall" in the rear. Which part is the "flipper" that I need to turn the other way?
Thanks, Roger

I wondered if something was amiss on the rear skid as I've never seen one that sat that "tall" in the rear. Which part is the "flipper" that I need to turn the other way? The flipper is the little piece that connects the rear torque arm of the skid to the chassis. The way I'd fix it would be to remove the bolt circled in this picture on both sides. Then lower the back of the sled down until you can get the bolt back trough the hole in the flipper. I think it will only line up in two positions. Make sure you support the back of the sled or someone holds it up after removing the bolts or it will fall down. This is what supports the back. Also, there is a small spacer that fits in the hole in the flipper. Make sure not to lose it, its important.
