This project has been in the works for awhile, started out building the free air 6 bolt, and later decided to go with a 71 chasis converted to a bubble. These are really nice light weight little sleds. It is a runner now, but needs test and tune. Carbs are still crazy rich, and the clutch is way off, but good enough for some break in time. I am hoping to get it sorted out and run it at Waseca, and Waconia this year.

That is really unique and cool. Must have taken a long time to build that one!

Test rode it last night, and it would not break 5500 rpm. The clutch is a new comet for a John deer, something I bought off e-bay or Craig's or something, and just bolted it on, with the thought of adjusting from there.
Tonight, as usual, always out of time and day light (no head light), I played with the clutch a bit. As purchased it has R weights, and a real super light spring.I gave it a heavy spring, now it engages @ 4700, and pulls like gang busters.
I was unable to get any more tach readings, as it was dark, and when the rpms came up, the gage lights blew out. I guess the used regulator I pulled out my collection was a bad one!
It will take a couple of good Saturdays to initially sort things out, then add studs, find some ice, and start the whole process over again. I guess racing is fun?
Stigerater, and Tomcat, where you guy's ben, I am gonna need some help at Clear Lake!

Was it just a matter of rounding off the front. That's awesome!

I am sure there are lots of guy's on here that have converted the 71 wedge hoods to bubbles, and there are probably some posts or even complete threads on the subject. If you cut the fin off to match the bubble chassis, you can mount the hinge and the hood fits right on. I am not sure if the handle bar bracing needs height adjustment or not ? I was committed to no hinge, and a total custom look. The entire fin was trimmed flush, and the bumper was slammed tight to the curved tunnel, and welded in place. Then we chopped 3" off the bottom front of the hood, causing the hood to tilt forward. The idea was to change the angle of the hood, exposing more of the engine. The other two pics are the dropped drive shaft, creating space for 1" picks. The way I do it you get to chop up the chaincase and the chassis !

This sled is super cool!!! What are the pipes from? Did Aaen ever make pipes for a Cuyuna?

The pipes are from a swap meet, have no idea what they were built for, but they are kinda small, maybe meant for a little 440. Strangely enough the antique free air 4 bolt JLO 440 I found at Princeton came with the exact pipes. Of course we had to cut and weld to make them fit.
I am not sure what rpm they will work best at, it would be fun to use a dyno to help find the power range, and sweet spot.
The sled is a bit of a Guild-ed Lilly right now, but we fully intend to put it to work, my guess is we are not done cutting and welding !
We had green grass yesterday, snow today, maybe test and tune this week.

Thanks Tom,
This one is not there yet, carb is still rich, and the clutch is holding it to 7000rpm, which is ok for now, but I think the pipes want 8000.
I am a bit nervous about leaning it down, hate to have a problem, a guy just has too much time into these little motors to get in a hurry and burn it up. You know how it is,if it burns a piston, we have tear it all the way to clean it up! Pain in dee ass.
That is the problem with the rare motors, we hate to use them like we should! I'll bet you get nervous running them Honkers?

Thanks Tom, That is the problem with the rare motors, we hate to use them like we should! I'll bet you get nervous running them Honkers? Sometimes a little nervous, but try to run them plenty fat in the jets and let them rip. It would be easier on my soul to fix a blown 793 than it is to leave it on the shelf or trailer. After running them, I have found they are pretty robust. Was more worried at first.

Weverat, that's pretty neat. I may try my own version of your free air beast. Looks like fun! Btw, Recoil says you should drop the trailer in Waconia for a little beverage.
