This is one of the Scorpions that I just picked up. I am told it is a 68? This one was the previous owners grandfathers. His grandfather raced it local in Southern PA. He removed the original 273? engine and placed this 290SS engine under the hood. The thing that gets me is the suspension. Looking at the rear of the sled it appears to be a farm weld job to attach the needed plates to make it work. But, the track clearly shows Scorpion. Can someone help figure this out and can you decipher the track part number for me to see what it was originally on. It shows part #35512. Darn thing was heavily picked or clawed at some point. I wonder how ol' granpa did at the races? Pretty neat sled. Thanks in advance Here are more photos as requested... The first is of the entire haul that I brought home... The rest are all of the 68? You will notice that there appears to be a factory exhaust bracket that is not currently being used? I believe I read somewhere on a post that the 290SS ran the best with a Donaldson exhaust as shown? Keep in mind this one came with a 273? engine originally. (I am supposed to pick the original engine up in a few weeks, might be other goodies that Granpa had stashed away too, I hope!!) This might be the sled that the dual Tilly setup was ran on? Unfortunately the harness had been cut before I got to it. I played around with it some and left it as you see it here. I have juice coming out of the flywheel all the way to the coil, just none coming out of the coil. Excellent compression too! vintagesleds.com/bs/index.php?topic=82100.0

Looks a lot like a 1967 chassis? Anyone want to confirm or deny?

I've heard a lot of guys ditched them 71 super stinger slides and changed em out with biggies. It doesn't surprise me to see them put in other machines. They are just so damn heavy. I had a 67 that had one in it.

Looking at the parts manuals, that chain case bracing seems to be present on both the 1967 and 1968 models.
I did not realize how similar the 1967 sled is to the 68' and 69' MARK series (and also maybe the 70' and 71' MARK series).
I have always thought the 1967 was a much different design with different parts than the 1968-1971 MARK models based on how different the shape of the 1967 hood is. I was wrong!
Below, I compiled part numbers of some major components between the years 67',68'and 69'. I did not look at the 70' and 71' parts books to compare them to the 1967' parts. The 1970 and 71' Mark series parts are probably the same or similar to the 69' model though.
Here we go! Study this interchange to see how things match and change as the years progress:
Chassis - part number 732500 fits: 1967 MARK II, 1968 MARK I
Chassis - part number 732600 fits: 1967 MARK III
Chassis - part number 832800 fits: 1968 MARK II
Chassis - part number 832600 fits: 1968 MARK III
Chassis - part number 932800 fits: 1969 MARK I and II
Chassis - part number 932600 fits: 1969 MARK III
Chassis - part number 933000 fits: 1969 MARK IV
Hood - part number 750000 fits: 1967 MARK II (there is no 1967 MARK I sled listed in the parts manual). This part number is also listed in the 1968 manual as fitting the MARK I. I did not realize that! Ever seen a 1968 MARK 1 with that 1967 style hood?
Hood - part number 750100 fits: 1967 MARK III
Hood - part number 850200 fits: 1968 MARK II
Hood - part number 850300 fits: 1968 MARK III
Hood - part number 950200 fits: 1969 MARK I and II
Hood - part number 950300 fits: 1969 MARK III and IV
Front bumper - part number 751700 fits: 1967 MARK II and III, 1968 MARK I
Front bumper - part number 851800 fits: 1968 MARK II, 1969 MARK I and II
Front bumper - part number 851900 fits: 1968 MARK III, 1969 MARK III and IV
Seat - part number 730000 fits: 1967 MARK II, 1968 MARK I
Seat - part number 730200 fits: 1967 MARK III
Seat - part number 830100 fits: 1968 MARK II
Seat - part number 930000 fits: 1969 MARK I
Seat - part number 930100 fits: 1969 MARK II
Seat - part number 930200 fits: 1969 MARK III and IV
Backrest pad - part number 731000 fits: 1967 MARK II, 1968 MARK I
Backrest pad - part number 731200 fits: 1967 MARK III, 1968 MARK III
Backrest pad - part number 831500 fits: 1968 MARK II
Backrest pad - part number 931500 fits: 1969 MARK II (replaced by part number 030283)
Backrest pad - part number 931200 fits: 1969 MARK III and IV
Track - part number 735000 fits: 1967 MARK II, 1968 MARK I
Track - part number 736000 fits: 1967 MARK III, 1968 MARK III, 1969 MARK III
Track - part number 835500 fits: 1968 MARK II, 1969 MARK I and II
Track - part number 936500 fits: 1969 MARK IV
Keep in mind, the manuals have occasional errors and I most likely injected at least one error while typing this up!
