Went to get a stinger III i found a few weeks ago. get it home, looked it over, its got minor surface rust, but man this chassis is very restoreable, i was going to take the suspension, and track out and junk it as I was told it was all rusted out. now I dont know what to do, im not trashing this chassis, im not a fan of the wedge look, but what do you guys think. I was going to use the parts for a mark III. Yea the hood is shot, but im sure theres got to be some more out there.

Then as I was going to leave this little 297 jumped in the truck. Just couldn't tell it to get out, had to take it home with me.

No no I met to say the track is nice the suspension is too. I was told the tunnel was all rusted out. Surface rust isent rusted out. I just wanted the suspension stuff before I got it home and realized this chassis has got potential.

75whip, Do you have a Mark III now that you need these parts for or do you want to build one? You could saber saw the square front chassis sheet metal to round it off and turn this baby right into a MARK III with an aluminum chain case and all. Pararailer is famous for turning the wedge chassis into a bubble nose. I think the bumper bolts might even be in the right locations. If I ever do the conversion someday, I'm going to have to figure out exactly where to cut the square sheet metal off the front to make it round with the correct dimensions.

When pararailer walks by a 71 wedge chassis, it starts shaking!!

I here you, back in the day, it was automatic, hit it in the head and salvage some parts. But I now have the same problem, all my parts sleds are to nice to part out, and are going to be a lot of work to restore.
I would not give up on the wedge hood model,go ahead restore it, it is a nice sled!
On the other hand, they do convert nicely to a Bubble Nose, complete with aluminum chain case, and a good track.
In order to figure out were to cut the fin, you need to have the Bubble hood and hinge. You need to save enough of the fin to mount the hinge.

This is my 71 Wedge before and after. You can see the donor Bubble hood in the back ground. This was a project that evolved as the Free Air JLO motor was built first, and stored under the bench. A few years later we chopped the Wedge and used the motor. My next Bubble is getting a 503, or a Polaris 488

hey now! I don't cut em all up! This is the 71 I put together 1 year ago. Traded it for my 78 TKX See that yours is a plastic tank. The ones to have are the steel tank 440 Sachs models.

Wow guys i don't even know who to quote on this. I do not have a true mark III in my position. The things i like about the 18" tracks is the stability in the ride, but also the mark III have that riser between the chassis and the seat that give a better ride for us taller guys. I seen a mark III hood not to long ago, but cant remember who had it. I cant wait to hear parirailers opinion on this. If I where to convert this the aluminum chain case is the one to have, plus im sure its much easier to modify a plastic tank to work with a bubble hood. I will have to go outside and turn the heater on in the shop, crack some beer (yep keysotne parirailer) And come up with a good ideal with this sled. I wonder how it would do left alone with the 297 in it, and stud the track for the long lake circuit? Singer4me what do u think for this combo? ?

I shortened a 71 w/t. Used a chaparal 18" track that is the same lenght as a 15" Scorp track. Took over 6" off the tunnel length.

Why the steel tank? Does that set up leave more room for the exhaust options etc?
And when you say steel, do you mean gas tank built into the chassis like a Bubble Nose?
I am asking because I am suddenly becoming motivated to go get my 71 Wedge from the shed, I have not even looked at it for a few years, and I did not realize some had plastic tanks. Wonder what mine is?

Yea. The steel tank ones are rare. Most 71's have the plastic tank. Twin inlet donadson mufflers are the way to go with the steel tank.

after looking at this i am leaning towards going bubble with it. I got a unemployed 440 cuyuna for it. But i see parirailer already has done this. I hate to copy anyone but with what I got for parts this would be a good option for me. the 297 sach? if im going to modify this thing might as well put some ponies in it.

Hardest thing is going to be finding a wide track bubble nose front bumper.
