First.... Willow River IS ON! Just got off the phone with Bradee. Big event planed. 2 awesome bands and fast sleds! Second.....Weverat, with 35hp we cant spin on wet grass. We just put some studs in to be like the "big" guys!

The 2016 Twin Ports Vintage Fest will be held Friday & Saturday, September 23rd & 24th, 2016, at Dusty Flat Speedway, just North of Duluth, MN.
As far as I can tell via the world wide web, the Douglass grass drag is the same weekend.
Douglas has a new guy (Tony) in charge of the races. He is the same guy that runs the ice drag race in Waseca, Mn. This guy is known for running the very best races around, very well organized, and lots of sleds show up for his events.
I was hoping to go to both events, hope they can take care of the conflicting dates. I have never been to the Twin Ports race, but I am guessing it is a good one too.

I put my new JLO 400 in the Sting yesterday. Pulled out a darn good running 440, the switch out was real easy as I used the same carb, pipe etc. Only took about an hour and a half total.
Always fun to fire up a new engine, this one took a few pulls as I managed to flood the engine, and when it did start it was running on one cylinder. Seams like they like to flood when freshly assembled, lots of assembly lube etc. Normally I run the sled around a bit in order to clean it out, but with a new top end, I hate to let it work very hard to start with (break in).
This motor has wiseco pistons which have been coated with an abraidable coating. This coating is built up, and adds .003 to the size of the piston. The freshly coated pistons fit tight in the cylinder, you have to push them back and fourth by hand until they are loose enough to fall through.
The coating is soft and comes off easily, until you start the engine and run it through a heat cycle. Then the product sets up and becomes very hard. We wind up with a scribe fit.
It is important to let the engine get hot the first time you start it, and then let it sit overnight.

It is definitely an experimental project, am hoping to make run as good as the bone stock 440. I will try to drag it out tonight, and rip it around the yard a little.
I have about 400 feet in the back yard, and it is uphill, just barely enough room to put it to work. I am hoping to set up a better longer test track this summer.

Gave it a minor work out tonight, pretty much just got the blue smoke out, seems to start better now. It currently is not as strong as the stock 440, seems to be missing some bottom end power, but it might come around? I am going to try the angle plug heads, and maybe a touch more timing. For now the timing is at .095, and the compression is 125. I am going to leave it this way for a while, try to get some time on it, and eventually add some timing, and compression. Also this motor seems to have more suction than the old half shot 440 as the carb is rich everywhere. We will see how bad it is on a warm day. Always reluctant to lean them out much until I am sure, and have room for a good test.

I checked the compression again today, and it is up to 130, but my gauge reads 7# less than Timmy's. I have another gauge that reads another 10# less.
Anyhow with Tim's gauge it is 140, mine 130, and my other gauge 120.
I swapped out the Hemi heads for Wedge heads, and the compression is now at 145,with my gauge (the one we always use) which I think is ok, another 15 pounds would probably be better?
What is the normal compression for these engines ? I know it will very, depending on thickness of gaskets etc.
My thought is compression does make power, but also heat. And I believe high compression mostly helps with bottom end power, and maybe not necessarily good for high rpm ?
It is fun to try different stuff.
It is cold and rainy, so no test runs today, but tomorrow we will give it try. We will see if those wedge heads help with the bottom end. You see that is why I left the timing way back at .095, kind of figured I would be using the wedge heads.

Just rebuilt my 400 and it has 145 with the angle heads.I use Winderosa gasket sets also.

Well, with your current set up you can race without your chin strap on your helmet. When you need a "heavy duty" chin strap, your getting close.!!

Sorry guys but I've been a little less interested in scorpions lately. Ive been working on a small block Chevy to drop into my 72 Chevy Vega.

OBJ, I can not find heavy duty chin straps any where, even called Wahl Brothers, they suggested use two regular straps, doubled up. Would that work?

Kube1 you finally chime in! been wondering how the snowflake crew has ben. The insulators come from www.zdenterprises.net/2055054.html he has parts for the cuyuna airplane motors. Good guy, lots of high quality stuff for our beloved Cuyunas. I remember you made some, but you have machine skills to make that happen. I just have a vice, hacksaw, and a file. Years ago, as a kid, I made a 12 tooth sprocket out of a 14 tooth for my Yamaha trail bike. I guess you can say that was the day I bonded with the rat tail file! You guys going to do some grass dragging this summer ?

This is an old junker 75 Super Stinger I drug out of the shed the other day. Was thinking it had potential as a grass dragger, nice track and suspension. Any how long story short, the 79 Sting got a re-built 400, so the 440 went in the junker Super Stinger. Were going to name it (Rusty Racer) I think it is the perfect thing for grass racing, we can beat the hell out it, run it on grass, gravel ,water, pavement, or whatever. The only thing is there is absolutely no room for studs, as the exhaust dumps out into the tunnel. These sleds are different than the Stingers, Whips, and Stings, as the engine is angled forward , and to get the muffler off you have to remove the track! Also it has to much angle for a Mikuni, so this one is getting a Walbro.

The ol lady worked all weekend, so I was binge wrenching. Mostly spent time digging up parts to put it together. As it turned out the only thing I did not have was the angled motor mount plate. Made a speed run to my favorite sled salvage yard, got real lucky and found one right away. I am pretty sure it is the last one in that yard ( parts are drying up ) Its all wired and plumbed with kill switches, regulator, tach, and a primer. The only thing left is to clean up the exhaust, and it will be ready for a test run. At Douglass last year this motor was in the Sting, it's best time that day was 7.9. We will see how it does in a Super Stinger.

Was that exhaust a 75 only thing? I have heard it was in the tunnel but not seen it before.
