unfortionaly the pistons both have a crack like this on them. Can I use any sa2 440 piston as long as the rings are cast? Like I said im new to these and learning on the go, also can this engine be used in the grass drags on a scorpion in a stock class or would it need to be in a modified class with this, hey the tag says its a 70 sa2 440

Bore should be chrome plated. Nitroking72 looks chrome plated to me no sleeve shinny chrome finish especial on the bottom where the piston rings never rubbed on it. not magnetic.

The SA440C,is an axial fan engine, puts out about 40hp.Anyway,bore should be 67.5mm,stroke is 61mm.,axial fan,1-HD carb.Pistons might be hard to find for this engine. And yes, yours is a "C" engine, designated with the C at base of cylinder. Was used in the Rupp Magnum,1970.This info was gotten from a Rupp Magnum kind of guy.My book is NOT up to date!!

These 440 c motors were used on SkiRouls.
Go ahead, stick it in a Scorp and race it. They make a little more power than the cast iron bore Sachs 440
The grass drags are all about the clutch. In stock E you need 35 to 40 hp.

Yes. Bring it out this summer! Bubanoz and Pararailer race these things. Those things are so fast you can leave late, and get there early!

Yes, those are nice motors. I have 3 of them, all needing rebuild. Actually I have never had them apart, just motors I found at swap meets etc. I was always going to tear down all three and make a best of.
I also have the twin exhaust from the 1973 Skiroule RTX 440 Sachs. I believe this exhaust system helped make the power, although a Donaldson would work almost as good, or maybe better. You never know.
I am pretty sure there is a regular Sachs (cast iron bore) somewhere in my hoard too. It would be fun to compare the port timing etc.
You can put that motor in a Bubble or a 71 Wedge, and run the 71 and older class at Princeton and maybe Willow River.
OBJ - Do they have the same classes at Willow?

The very early sachs twins had a cast bore and straight plugs. I've never personally seen one. Next came the chrome bore with angled plug heads. They were 35ish hp. That does not make it a C engine. The SA2/440C engine has a larger exhaust port and the heads have almost no dome to increase compression. They use the A.B.C. component tolerance as other sachs engines. You can get everything you need for the engine from GPI.

Do you have a source for looking up the part numbers on the castings, whats weird is I cant find these number anywhere online

Yup, thats the standard SA2-440 head. They are very good engines in my opinion. They really like the donaldson 2 into 1 mufflers and run hard up to about 7000 RPMs. I have no clue about specific part numbers or where to find them.

Took the engine in today to have the crank redone, the engine machinist i go to said yep standard sa2-440. Said i will love it when its all done new pistons balanced crank new bearings. Talked to a few people now about it, yep use the dual inlet Donaldson get rid of the y pipe, I asked about dual carbs, everyone said don't waste my time Hook up a single HD. and like weverat said earlier in the post its all about clutching. I know how important that is if that not right any engine is a dog. Now time to find nos points, and condenser. need spark too.

got the crank back today, new bearings, and balanced. was going to assemble it then found out I got a complete gasket set that was not complete. No crankcase gasket, yea that's helpful. also got the sa297 back bored to 74mm, and replaced the needle bearing with a regular bearing? dont know what the bearing is, but the machinist i use has done many like this.

Whip, it's nice to see someone else working on their engine. I started reassembling my Cuyuna today only to also find out that my gasket set was also wrong...one seal is too small. I only have myself to blame (mostly) as I should have checked the set more closely .
Seeing that I don't grass drag my sled, it's all good...should be ready for snow.
