Ben campaigning the Free Air Bubble this winter. Ran it at Waconia, and Okoboji. Along with a few test runs the thing went 500 feet 12 times, and used 2 1/2 gallons of gas! Now that the motor is fully broke in we bumped the compression to 160, and the rpm,s to 7900. We will be running race gas in it for the first time at the Waseca race. Those little pipes seam to like it, might try letting it go up to about 8500, but damm. do not want to break it. So far it is holding up pretty good, added a brace to the chain case, and had to tighten the track and chain a couple times. We are planning to switch out half the picks for chisels as the guys are beating us out of the hole. Nothing another $200 won't fix.

That sled is so cool. How are you bumping up compression? Using thin copper/aluminum head gaskets or shaving the heads? do you know how tight the squish is? I went from a stock piston to a wiesco piston and my compression dropped a bit and I want to bump it back up.

I am cutting the heads, squish is at .065 After cutting the head, we cut the squish back into it.
Currently I am using a Winderosa .050 head gasket. I would like to try a .040 gasket, that would put the squish at about .050 and probably raise the compression another 10-15 pounds.
Where can I find thinner gaskets?, or do I just need to find some copper a cut my own (sounds like a pain)
Why don't some of you guy's come down to Waseca on Feb 25th, and help me run it.
OBJ, get down here dammit! Bubba, Bullwhip, Rail Man, it would only be an hour drive for you guys.

You can cut your own gaskets or there are a couple places you can send in your fiber gaskets and they lazer cut new gaskets whatever thickness you want. I plan to cut my own out because I am cheap. I'm going to try for .050 squish. I want my compression up 160 +. I put in the wisecos and I went down in compression compared to a GPI piston.

weverat, i thought you told me the more logs in the stove the hotter it gets?? You keep making your furnace smaller, you wont get no heat. No heat, no big boom. Right?

But a small stove with just the right log!
You gotta give up that perfect base gasket thickness eventually, I think you actually told me once, but the apple pie was already on board!

Hey weverat, can you explain to us "newbie" racers what "squish " is, and how to measure it? and how it affects the motor?

Good info in this thread guys, Good luck racing weverat, wish I could have done some one lunger this winter. Should be good to go for grass drags this summer, got a couple ready for that at least.

Any updates on this one? How did the 25th go? Were you able to get 8500rpm out of it?

The race was canceled, not enough ice. the waseca race has been canceled 2 years in a row now, we just do not get enough cold weather here in southern Mn.
going to Elephant lake this weekend, 50 miles south of the Canadian border. It is still winter up there.
Looks like if I stayed here all weekend, I would probably have to mow. Rained good last night, and now the sun is out, you can watch the grass turn green.

That sucks about the race, the race up north should be good to go, i guess for me this was a good winter to be sidelined from any activity. a buddy of mine just sold me a bunch of his vintage sled stuff, he said hes sick of these winters and sold all of his stuff. Well at least there is grass drags, got hooked last year, and i will be recoverd here by may so ill be iching to run the range whip on the grass, see you guys then
