I'm running a 77 sting with paraslide suspension. I slightly modified the skid to run a rubber track. Last year I was using a JD liquifier driveshaft and track. It would spin 3/4 of the way around just fine, then the last 1/4 of a turn its like it was binding up. I thought it might have been a bad spot in the track or something, that and the track weighs about 300 lbs. So I tore it down over the winter and put in a driveshaft and track from a 1980 sting. Its doing the exact same thing. Spins nice and smooth 3/4 of the way around and the last 1/4 is binding. The belt is off and the chain disconnected so I am just spinning the track and driveshaft. I have replace bearings, made sure shafts are straight and square, skid is straight and square, track adjusted evenly. It does the same thing no matter the track loose or tight. I have upper idlers like the 80 sting and it does it with them in or out. I can't seem to figure out what the deal is. Any Ideas or suggestions are appreciated.

Hello stinger 440.
I have an '80 sting which I've gone through 100% this past summer.
This doesn't necessarily make me an expert, but I've got a few ideas.
First off, check out my track below to make sure that it's the same stock unit.
If it is, check to see that a track clip guide is not binding on one of your drivers (this is my number one suspicion).
The stock white drivers are often split (cracked) and if your driver cogs are spread apart just enough and one of your clip guides also bent just enough...the two could bind.
I've replaced my drivers with newer black plastic one from NOS Cat 3.29 pitch and the track was newly replaced with an NOS.
Hope this helps...let us know.

You may have to resort to what I had to do. Remove hood, engine and tank. Flip over machine onto two saw horses and spin track by hand until you find what is rubbing or binding. Use the best lighting you've got.
Fixing old machines is like repeatedly hitting your head against the wall...it feels so good when you're finally done .

I replaced the drive sprockets with black ones. slide rails appear to be centered pretty close on the clips. Its strange that 2 different tracks/driveshafts are doing the same thing. Going to check the rear axle again and make sure its square. If it was not square, seems like it would bind all the way around, not just 1/4 turn.

Are you running the paraslide 1 suspension?

Yes, that is a bummer, as a racer we are always trying to free up all that friction. Is all I can think of is the driver wheels must be a touch out of time with track.
If the wheels are trying to climb over the knobs in the track. You could try turning the wheels down about a 1/4" and see if that helps.
Or you could just run it for while and see if the track stretches out a bit and hopefully the wheels wear into the track and start to run more smoothly.
On our racers we try to run the original track and drivers that are worn into each other.

Wondering if your track has a 2" pitch and you are running 2.52 drivers, or the other way around. Good luck!

When I was running the JD track, I was using the matching driveshaft. Both came off the same sled and were doing the same thing. Now I have the 80 sting track and I have modified other brand drive wheels to fit the 80 sting driveshaft. So they could be off a tad. I think I am going to spray the drive lugs down with Armor All and see if that helps free things up. When I roll the track around it feels to me like its in the rear wheels but I can't see anything obvious.
Stinger4me, it is a 3.29" pitch with 3.29 drive wheels.

I have a old Evinrude i was having the same problem. Ruining it adjusting the carb on a stand it chewed up the lugs on the track, turning it by hand i could see it climbing up on to the track lugs. Come to find out there was a builtin about running the tracks when there dry. just sprayed some wd40 on the track lugs, it quit riding up on the drivers. I can tell when i take it out on the driveway before i get in any snow that it binding up a bit, soon as i get some snow in the skid it stops binding. Worth a try to lube the track and see what happens, can just wet it down with a hose to see if it helps.
