I did a VIN number search on my Sting and it says it is indeed a 1980 Sting that came out with the 400 engine. The machine seems very untouched, with the exception of the instrument panel? I can't find pictures of any Scorpion that looks like this. It fits perfect, but is it from a different model? That is a Cuyuna speedometer in it.

My guess would be that you have a '79 Sting 400 with a 80/81 hood. Your seat cover, pararail II suspension and 400 former engine are all clues. Maybe the 400 did not come with a tach like the 440s did?
80/81 Stings only came with 440s...(it must be true, I've read it somewhere on the internet!!!)
Our sleds may be brothers from different mothers? or sisters from different misters?

It looks like you're right Rene! I used the Vintage Scorpion Register, and my serial number makes it a 1979 Sting 400 with a Paraslide II suspension. They did have a very bare instrument panel on them just like mine. I didn't know I brought home an illegitimate child! I think I'll leave the 1980 hood on it...now that it's painted!!! Gary

It may be an illegitimate child, but you'll love it just the same!
Do you have a cdi ignition or points?...only the 80/81 Sting 440 engines had a cdi unit.

It's a 440 with points. They were a pain to clean up, and set correctly, but it sure runs good now!
