Also if you look at scorpion trails web site under images, there is a photo taken at the duluth indoor race of maybe 12 sleds with the hoods cut just like mine.

I always heard that 1971 was NOT the first year of the Super Stinger. If you read the 1970 sales brochure it states that "Super Stinger race sleds are also available". If I were to guess I would say that these were hoods were cut for Free Air engines during the summer of 1969 for the early part of the 1969-1970 race season. Later in the season a hood was made just for free air sleds/engines. They must have made some special decals for the 1970 Super Stingers. The 1971 Super Stingers had round decals (similar to all 1971 Scorpion models).
When we took delivery of a 1971 Super Stinger we were told that it had the wide track front on a narrow track tunnel. We thought that it was unusual but were also told that there were some sleds built/raced at the end of the 1970 racing season (with bubble nose hoods) that also had the WT front and a narrow track tunnel. Never saw one though! Dennis Moore

We are going to use our cut out hood at princeton this summer. We are going to put a 8" megaphone on a 340ss for the new feature class. we'll be able to stick the meg right out the front! The Chubba brothers have megaphone on a single so were going after 'em! We are also putting megs on a tkx and we'll run our 634mod for "THE WORLDS LOUDEST DRAG RACE"

I have a 1970 Super stinger that I am in the process of rebuilding . it would be nice to havesome of those Super stinger decals to put on it to really complete the project. This is a rare sled that I have ..The chaincase is offset about four inches to accomadate a large twin motor and still have the motor centered on the tunnel.I am planning to put a 650 hirth motor on it.

I would really like to see the offset chaincase.
Is it possible that the sled was made for a 740 Sachs engine?
Can you post some photos or send them to me at mooreperformance@verizon.net
I am building a Stinger with a 740 Sachs and I need as much info as I can get.

Looks like a pretty rare piece you have there. You're a lucky guy !!!!!!!!!!!!

Thank you very much for posting the photos. Every little bit of info is helpful. I was a real Scorpion enthusiast in the late 1960's and early 1970's and never have I seen anything like this. I am very envious of your find. Sincerely Dennis Moore

Something I found on a search for the 740 Sachs engine:
1969 Rupp GTX 740 This snowmobile has the first one of only 10 740cc Sachs engines that were installed in the Rupp snowmobiles. The engine was originally built for use in a stationary power plant in Germany. Germany decided to send 30 to the U.S. 10 went to the Rupp manufacturers, 10 to Skiroule, and 10 to Scorpion. This sled was tested at the SS testing site in Wayland, MI, and has several SS test parts that are not on any other Rupp. Rupps were made in Mansfield, OH. OWNER: Greg McPherson St. Johns, MI
Sorry I have no photo to go with this statement.
