Anyone race a 71 Superstinger with 18" track? Now or back in the day. I'm considering putting a clone on the ice this next season and want to know if its worth the time. I will be running a 440 Sachs fan engine instead of a free air. I guess what I am wondering is if the length/width of the track is a major disadvantage or not.

I would have to say, with experience with 71's, sachs sa2440 fans and both 18 inch and 15 inchers, the narrow tracks would beat the wides if you were going to try to stud and ice race. The wide track is not only wider but longer too. The wide track will be much heavier and slower. The reason they made 71 super stingers in a wide track is because to put a triple cyl 793. Tunnel needs to be wider to fit the wide engine. I have never seen a 793 triple fit in a 15 inch super I would bet that back in 71, a narrow track 440r sled would beat a wide track 793hirth but I could be wrong.

My concern was the weight also. I wasn't thinking I would be winning, just thinking about the coolness factor. Total sled weight is not all that much more but track weight is quite a bit.

Sure would have a coolness factor! The chassis for a wide track is about 6 Inches longer. I took a chapparall 18" track and put it in a 71 18" . Cut 6 inches off. Also used the larger diameter rear Idlers with the shorter rear swing arms. That helped the wide track handle and it is pretty fast but still wouldnt beat my 71 super stinger with the wide front and 15" track on the trail.

71 stinger + 440 sachs + narrow lite track = FAST! but I do agree that a wide track would be cool!
