I found this "official" list of engine options for these sleds. In parenthesis, what I know about them. For the ones missing, can someone fill in the blanks for me ? Also, what carbs did each motor use ? Also. . What exactly was "modified" on the motors listed as such ?
293 CCW Modified (2 Cyl, ______ cooled) 340 CCW Modified (2 Cyl, ______ cooled) 340 CCW RS Modified (2 Cyl, Free Air cooled) 400 CCW Stock (2 Cyl, Fan cooled) 400 CCW Modified (2 Cyl, ______ cooled) 440 CCW RS Modified (2 Cyl, Free Air cooled) 440 Sachs R Modified (2 Cyl, Free Air cooled) 650 Hirth Modified (2 Cyl, Free Air cooled) 793 Hirth Modified (3 Cyl, Free Air cooled)

I seen a CCW 290 free air twin down at Waconia this year. The HR carbs mounted at an angle. What a cool sled. Wish I had a pic. It was so original! Guy is from southern MN and said he has a few. I gave him a card for the site. Are you out there 290 free air? Roger and I were talkin to him moments before the dinner banquet. Obj1, did you see that 71?
I have never seen a 650 hirth in one. I wonder if they put those in wides or narrows mostly?
I was told that they used a F/A 340 CCW modified in Crosby and they used a F/A 340 CCW modified from CCW. Two different engines?
My great uncle had one with the 440R and I was told it was fast.
My grampa changed his 340CCW from free air to fan cooled. He also didnt like the twin expansion chambers because it burned down a piston right after he got it. He said Scorpion gave him a instruction sheet for the adjustment of the flex pipe length. He changed to a muffler and raced it that way! He traded his 70 634 for a 71 340ccw and was pretty successfull at the races. anybody else use a nos flap for a mouse pad?

The 290 at Waconia is Aaron Stevens's from Northwood, Iowa. The picture I posted in the other post are of one owned by me. I have 2 and Aaron, (my nephew) has another. I have seen a few wide track 650's and heard of a couple narrow track 650's. The free air 340 from CCW is the R engine with the dedicated free air heads and recoil housing. The one modified at Crosby is similar to our 290's. The shroud is removed, recoil housing cut off, some porting was done. Some were dual carbed, some were not. Some were piped, some were muffled, and some had a hybrid pipe muffler combination. The 440R Sachs sleds were pretty fast. A lot better than the 440R CCW sleds. both were twin piped. Most of the 340R CCW sleds used just on stinger pipe. Thats a good idea to use a flap as a mouse pad!

Nice! Those Red Barons are a hand full when they are dialed in. Here is my NOS one. We'll pop its cherry some day when it is in its corresponding Super stinger chassis.

Wow! This brings back old memories. When I was a kid back in 1971, a guy on my paper route owned St Cloud Tool and Die. From what I remember, his company stamped out the bodies for Scorpion. Apparently Scorpion was having cash flow problems and Mr. Miller took about 30 Scorpion Super Stingers (just like the one above) in trade. He was selling the 340's for $625, 440's for $725 and 640's triple for $825. These were all free air machines. Many neighbors purchased one from him. My dad bought a 340 and we drove it for years. He later purchased a '75 Scorpion Whip w/ 400 engine. I had that sled (Whip) until I gave it to a friend from church a few years ago. It even had electric start. The '71 340 F/A had a very loud "tuned" muffler whereas the exhaust pipe came out on the right side by your ear. We all got rid of those and put on Thrush mufflers which were a little quieter. It had twin carbs mounted right in front of you which added to the loudness of the sled. But they would move. The suspension was weak and we took it out and beefed it up as the stops would break off. I believe it did have the para-rail suspension in it. Anyway this sled is what got my dad hooked on snowmobiles and I really appreciated it back then. Dad had the Whip, JD 300, and a Yamaha GP338 after that. He and mom rode until they were in their late 60's. Thanks for having this website up. It brought back good memories!

That list from Snowmobile Sales in Marshfield is from the Wi distributor for scorpion. Tomorrow at Wausau i am going to See Russ Lemke. Russ was one of the key peformance guru's there and i want to know if those engines were modified in Marshfield or Crosby. The guys in Marshfield always seemed to have better stuff than in Crosby. Russ went on to rotax fame and now is in the hall of fame. Anyone notice in princeton the yellow rotax canopy in the pits that said "power by russ"?

OBJ, that sounds interesting. I am impressed with many of your historic backgrounds and knowledge of the Scorpion lineup. Me, I am just a hacker who's family had a scorpion. LOL Tell me this if you can. Is this an original SuperStinger engine, or someones "fabbed up" recoil? 440 ccw. What clutch and what carbs would have been on this if it is a factory job?

ddub, that is a modified fan cooled recoil mount. Not 100% sure if that is a factory mod or not. Kinda looks like a 440 fanner with a free air top end.

stinger440,
That is what I suspected, but I have seen a few others cut in a similar fashion?

I have made a couple free air 400's by cutting the fan housing off like that. I think the factory did that on the 400 mod and the 290 mod. Factory that would have the rat trap clutch which is similar to the powerthrust 1. A set of HD's would leak fuel into the cylinders. Not sure what version of HD though.

Here is a picture of the rat trap clutch you need.
