I thought we discussed this previously but I cannot find it. I matched a Red 79 Whip hood. Does the Whip use the same color as the TK style? I would guess so? What years would have this been? To me by looking at pictures and memory, I would say 77-80 red poly hoods are the same except for the 80 Sting. Here is a good picture. www.vintagesnowmobiles.50megs.com/PP5819.htmlWhat feedback can you give me on this? Thanks

A red Whip hood would only have come off a '78 TK/TKX they had Whip on the hood and TK or TKX on the tunnel, Whips used Blue hoods in 77 & 78 (with the choice of red or blue on the TK/TKX) 79 to the end of production they used Black hoods on Whips, the red Sting hood for '79 was the '78 red whip TK/TKX hood with different decals
someone could easily take a red NOS hood with no decals and turn it into a '78 Whip TK/TKX or even toss regular Whip decals on it, the 78, 79 and 80 decals would look cool on the red hood
the '79 Whip hood would be black with the hockey stick decals (i would love to see '79 or '80 decals on a red hood)

You are correct. I didn't really think about it, but when I looked at the build date I was surprised that this one was a 79.....
But the question really remains the same. It looks to me like Scorpion used the same red on the red poly hoods, 77-80. 80 Sting being different. Can anyone verify this?

79 was getting close to when the last whips were being made
My guess is that in a rush to get things out the door, they likely were grabbing stuff that simply just fit, arctic with their own sleds were famous for doing stuff like that, the first jags were simply using up el tigre parts from a older design. There was likely not a black hood hand when yours was put together, that or someone simply decided red would look better on that particular whip
I would love to see pictures, that is a neat curiosity. I know I have a picture some posted on another site of a 77 whip with 300 on the tunnel decal, so anything is possible, what left the factory may not always match the brochures or advertisements. Look at the 80 sting, I have seen 2 different hoods featured in the ads, yet only see the one style in real life

I don't know if I should admit this.............
First off, I'll give you some history on this sled. It was "given" to me for some work I had done.
Any how, I just threw it in the barn. When something goes in the barn, that is bad news. Seems to be a slow painful removal from the priority list. Only one sled has been removed from the barn for revitalization and brought to the shop. Although a few (including this one) might be going to someone else's shop soon.
When I grabbed a chunk (yes I said chunk) of the hood to match I noticed it had a Mikuni on it. Hummmmmmm. But didn't really look at anything else. I also noticed it has electric start! LOL So, it's a 79 440 Sting with E start.
Well, I was selling some parts off of another sled and I look over. It has "Sting" on the hood, not Whip. LOL So, it's a 79 Sting. I just had it in my head it was a Whip.
But, the question on what years is the red used, was still accurate. LOL

Dennis, I can answer your question it is just a little work to do it. I have a NOS 1979 TK hood and an NOS 1978 TK hood stored away.
My guess is they are close, but since one is plastic and one fiberglass gel coat there may be a slight difference. I'll try to dig them out and set them together and take a pic in the near future.
As for the 78 TK and 79 Sting hoods, they are the same hood, the TK has the air intake for the walbro carb setup riveted up on it. The 79 Sting doesn't have that, but just has the holes riveted shut on all I have seen.
to that end, all the whip hoods from 77-81 and the 79 Sting are the same basic hood, just in different colors.
