I have several late seventies 440 340 and 400 engines in different states of repair .What crankshafts will interchange between these sleds? How far back does the interchange go ? and finally what is the generic part number of the flywheel seal when electric start is used?

if your talking about Cuyuna's. . . 75 and up interchange. crank, case, fan housing, stator etc. . . 290, 340, 400, 440 all the same. Differences are cylinders and pistons and heads. In 1979 440's and 400's went to center plug heads. but they will bolt on earlier 6 bolt 400 and 440's. I don't know what you mean by generic number for the electric start seal, but it is different than the non-electric start seal. Scorpion number is 000-42-319-45. I probably have one if you need one. click on electric start here to see the parts breakdown for electric start. The seal looks to have been part of the kit for that perhaps www.vintagescorpion.com/AddPartsTreeXml.aspx?ID=Scorpion1979

What about pre cuyuna ? would Rockwell or jlo pieces be the same. I have an old cheese whizz 340 that I would like to rob the electric start flywheel and starter from as well as the crank if it will fit?

The 75 rockwells should interchange. Pre 75 I don't think so. From 75 and up, they had two internal center bearings with a rubber seal in the middle. Before that the JLO's had one center bearing and I believe a labyrinth type center seal next to it. So the case and crank are both different.
It is possible you could put newer jugs (with matching pistons and heads) on the old crankcase, but I don't know that for sure. My guess is you could, but it isn't something I have done or know anyone who has. I guess you'd have to check how things matched up.
