Two real options. . 1) remove the mag side cylinder like you speculated. 2) remove the fan housing. There are 4 bolts under the flywheel that hold the fan housing to the crankcase. If you have previously re-sealed the motor, i'd opt for removing the fan housing. If you've never resealed the motor, now is the time to do it :-) When you get to the fan bearings, you will find they are unsealed on the inside.
