I have a 1976 440 whip. Im in the process of restoring it and am trying to get the carb right. I took it off and cleaned it completely. It's back on now but still not running quite right. With air screw out 1.25 - 1.5 turns, I got smoothest/best rpms. Then adjusted idle screw that moves throttle lever to hit about 2300-2500 rpm. All this done with track on the ground.
When I lift the track, the engine seems great and runs smoothly. However when I sit down and try to ride, it's slow off the mark and seems to bog down. I can get it going but have to really feather the throttle. Do I need a new belt? New carb? Better adjustments??? Help!!

I am thinking you have the walbro WF carb ? either way it sounds like the idle mixture is lean. I ofton run the idle mixture a tad rich, seems to help the transition from idle to mid range with out hesitation.
I adjust the high speed screw while running on the snow, full throttle. I know the carb is not in your lap, but you can open the hood and turn it in 1/4 turn at a time untill the boggle goes away. Be carefull, to lean will burn a pee stone within a few hundred feet !
Sometimes, I try to find the too rich setting, where it boggles, smokes, looses power, feels like the choke is on etc. and then turn the screw in 1/4 or so from there.
With practice you will make tiny adjustments for each day. or as the weather changes.
With my tunnel mounted engines, I will lean er down a touch in the woods, and crank it open when we hit the lake, I can,t help myself, I am cranking on the screw all the time, I love the old Waldos, and Tillys are ok too!

When you guys are rebuilding these carbs are you using genuine kits or aftermarket kits? The genuine kits are quite a bit more but i suspect they may be better quality. Any suggestions?

I've used the after market kits and not had any problems. It's very important to make sure every little hole is clean, I usually take a small piece of wire and put through every hole. One little piece of dirt and it's going to run poorly. Dennis Kirk, Shade Tree, Hi Performance or you can even find the kits on ebay.
