i was on a local clubs vintage ride and put on 60 miles when the sled stated to lose power. pulled over and raised the hood to see parts of the cooling fan belt and the cooling fan upper pulley laying by the carb. never heard anything blow or smelled a burning belt. parts off the pulley tore the engine down today, i was suprised to see only the mag side piston damaged. there is aluminum all over the inside of the crankcase. going to have to clean this one up real good.

Did you get stuck on the trail?

yes i was about 200 yards from a road, one of the guys on the ride pulled my sled up to the road , and then i had to call my wife to come get me. i am confused about the fan pulley blowing apart because the nut is still tight on it.

I ran out of gas and had to be towed last weekend. Long ride. Burned off at least 4 gal in 30 miles! Ccw fan assemblies can fall apart too. I fear that same thing happening to me. Or just blowing a belt and burning down at wide open trail ride. Is the Reed valve motor fan the same as the piston port 400? They are hard to detect a problem until it's too late. You got that engine from obj1? Are the pistons hard to get?

the pto side pistons you cant find anywhere they are the the one that usually melt and havent been made since 1982. i was lucky and found 3 n.o.s. mag side pistons last year and bought them and 4 extra sets of rings. the r.v. piston is very different then the port ones. whenever i see an ccw 400 r.v. engine for sale i try to buy it just to start building up a parts supply. the engine did come from obj1, i'll have to check the warranty with him . i put over 400 miles on the engine this winter and it ran great until the pulley blew. about the only thing a guy could to do is put a temp gauge on the sled so you might get a chance to save a melt down. rick

What is the difference from those pistons to the JD 400 ccw reed valve? Maybe some minor tweak can be done to make them work?
I have two sets of those.

hey ddub, the john deere engines used a 18m.m. piston pin while the scorpion ccw's used a 16m.m. pin. i know of one person that did do this change over because he had to send the crank out for a new center seal he had the shop put in 2 n.o.s. john deere piston rods so he could run the john deere 18mm pistons.

That is interesting info. It seems as if the JD parts are a lot more common. It might be worth doing the conversion for a sled that gets ridden and is going to be a keeper.
