A few years ago I had a body shop clear coat a 72 stingeroo hood. They only charged me 50 bucks and it turned out pretty nice. Although it had some orange peel, it still had a really glossy wet look.
I also traded a lawnmower with a different body man for a clear coat job on a 74 stinger hood. Also wet and glossy.
I have rattle canned clear on 2 hoods since then with bad results. They look good for a while but then start to chip and flake off for no apparent reason (don't try this at home folks)
My question is, can I go up to my local parts store autobody supplier and purchase some clear and spray it with my cheap gun and compressor to get better than rattle can results? What kind of clear do I need and how do I reduce it? I'm not going to use a very good gun so maybe I'm better off just having a body shop spray it? Why doesn't the rattle can work? But the other stuff does? This hood I want to do is a 71 stinger III hood. Its very nice as is and will look absolutely awesome with a glossy coat of clear on it.

Chris, Any clear with hardener is better than 1K clear out of a aerosol. They do make 2K aerosol clears if you want to go that route.
I also have some clear, qt with hardener $40.00.

pararailer have you ever gone into welle auto in Blaine there and talked to them. Those guys have alot to offer in there. i would go in and tell them what your trying to do and see if they can help you out. They sold me some sorta clear made by ppg a few years ago that was easy to work with. or just get the stuff form ddub that's a good price for clear with the hardener and use a old hood to practice on
