Hello,
I am looking at a 70 Stinger for sale and I have some questions...it has a Sachs SA370 engine in it. Did they come with the SA 370? The serial # starts with S042 what does that mean? There is a Donaldson muffler exiting to the right side of the belly pan through a vertical hole. There is also an exhaust hole at an angle on the right side...possibly for a stinger?
Any info would be appreciated. I am trying to find out if this is original or not. Thanks.

jon, To my knowledge all 70 stingers have the angled exhaust hole on the side by the chaincase. What you got there is the sachs cassis the exhaust that exits on the right. If the chassis was for a hirth it would exit to the front of the chassis, and had the hood with the bump on the right side to clear the larger hirth engines. The angled exhaust port i believe was for the 793 hirth. that had tripple pipes one used that exhaust hole. the other two exited on the right side where the donaldson is.
As for the serial number s042 To my knowledge its just the serial number and is the number to that sled. As far as i know Scorpion dident document a serial number to a certain engines like some other manufacturers. As for the engines I have seen literature that says the stingers came with the Hirth twins 399, 339, 493, 634, 793, and with the 293ss and 340ss sachs, however i have seen these with the standard 293 sachs the 370 sachs, and i seen one with the kohler 440 in it. And they sold a kit for the 370 sachs that was called a git kit. It came with a cast iron cylinder, and head. that was a (396cc) 400 and had a sachs tuned pipe, and a gem intake. and they where loud as hell. I think you could order what motor you wanted for the singer.
So in my opinion you got a unmolested sachs stinger there. if your concerned about anything check inside the gas tank and check it for rust. you can unscrew the cap on the top in front of the motor where the fuel line enters the tank, and look in there to see the condition of the tank. This can be a problem with these if they sat for a long time without good gas in them. (if you don't mind me asking, is it the one i seen on ebay recently?) Im not interested but i think they where asking way to much for it. I thought it has the 370 sachs too.

Yeah, that's the one. I know they want more than it's worth but he is negotiable. What is a fair price for it?

well the thing is with that stinger is the sa370 is not a valuable motor. Now its a good motor got nothing against them, but if the sled had a 340ss 293ss those are worth alot more. Last year I seen one here in mn with the 340ss in great shape for $1500, not sure if it sold or not. I seen one here this fall on cl for $750. looked to be in good shape. The add said it had a 300 sachs? so not sure if its was a 293ss or stadard 293. Not on there anymore so not sure if it sold or not too. The sled you are looking at is in really good shape by the pics i seen of it, But like i said how is the gas tank? what shape is the tunnel in under the seat and over the track, how is the track? what shape are the drivers in? is the seat getting ready to crack in anyplace? In my opinion $500-1000 and $1000 very tops. Just remember with this 70 stinger you can still get new hoods, and seat covers from scorpion jack so its not like this is the only one out there in this good of shape, however it should be able to win a unrestored class in a vintage snowmobile show. Hopefully a few others chime in on this and give you there opinion on it too. For $2000 i don't think its going anywhere any time soon.

You know what pararailer is right. If it needs no work and you can jump on it and ride it. Go get it its only money, but try offering him less at first and see what happens. If you are cheap like me and buy one that needs work for $500 next thing you know you got $2000 in it, and just should have brought a proven runner in the first place lol. Yes its easy to do.

s042 = Stinger , 1970, 400cc general engine size, 2 means Mark 2 size chassis.

Yes, this is what I am saying, but from what I have noticed over the years is the engine size number stops at 4, so a 634 would still have engine size number 4. If anyone has a sled with a larger engine size number it would be great to have you post its info here. Tom

I have always seen the numbers but never put much thought into it. Thanks for the info tom. Did the mark series have any special meaning to there numbers too? jonct did you ever but that stinger let us know what happens with that.

You can run it on any of them. But it was part of the "GIT-KIT" a competition conversion kit you put on you standard SA 293 to make it a 320cc or a 370 into a 400cc single. Huge piston! 82mm. I know people will say the preferred motors are the 293SS the 340SS or 290C and 340C and so on... But don't let anyone scare you away from a Iron lunger like a 370. It will run right with them, and the pistons are cheaper. yah!!!

I always have heard about that Montana pipe used on the scorpions. I was looking for one for a long time to run with the 400 Sachs I use to have but never found one. I have seen pics of if but the only cassis I ever found factory with the same 400 used the Sachs pipe that exited by the area the Donaldson exited. Sold the Sachs 400 and a bunch of parts and got the 634 hirth and finished the hirth stinger I had. I know a guy who races the 370 Sachs and loves it and they are alot cheaper to deal with than any of the ss or comp Sachs engines

Does he race the One Lunger 100? If you have never done it. Great thing to put on your "Bucket List". How is the 634 running. I have a friend who had one in a Polaris. That motor had a great rumble to it. Sounded tough!

he did race in the long lake class it was 2006-2007 if i remember right but i have not talked to him for a few years now. He had kids i had a kid so things change when that happens lol. But yea my next scorpion I hope will be a one lunger. I have always wanted to race one. I have been watching a 72 stinger II with the 340ss for awhile now, but i think he wants a little to much for it right now, or maybe im just cheap. The 634 dose sound cool. In fact i was planing to take it to the lake latter today. I have not had a chance to take it out much got no snow here, got to make sure its okay to go the reunion is coming up in a month now.

I want to go to the reunion, but my 4th and 7th graders have basketball tournaments at different times and places. I don't think I will make it. I am building a custom Mark I / Stinger. Been working on it for about three years now. I'm slow. The kids suck up all the time. I wanted to bring it because it will have one of those Montana pipes on it. At least that's the plan. No fancy 340SS motor or anything. I converted! Yes I came out of the closet. I'm a "Iron Lunger" I can't help it. I have had really good luck with them and just fell in love.
72' Stinger II is a great sled. Just remember once you go "single" you never go back.....

Lol Ill keep that in mind. My boys only one so far so im trying to get a few of these sled now before he gets into the school age. Im sure my free time will be a very rare thing by then. but thats part of being a father. Those montana pipe are rare I tried to find one when i had the 400. You should post that mark I stinger. Im guessing your using the stinger chassis due to the pipe and a mark I hood? what seat are you going to use? Like I said early in the post the 370 may not be a valuable as the ss or comps, but i got nothing against them. I see people sell the 340ss from $300-$500 on vs from time to time. I would just go with the 370 if I was in your situation too. Like to see how it performs with that pipe.

Actually it is a Mark I chassis with a Stinger hood. The hood is old and faded, so I am painting it black with red stripes. All the chrome was really rusty so I sandblasted it and painted it all flat black as well. The seat is an old Stingeroo seat I had recovered. It looks completely different than the original. I am trying to use up the parts I have laying around. I'm tired of tripping over them. The motor is the original SA 280. The sled is pretty light so I can get buy with a smaller motor. Again using up parts. Besides if you think the 370 pistons are inexpensive, 280 pistons are about $15 a piece. Heck, people practically pay you to take the 280's off their hands. I got rid of all my bigger Sachs singles to my brothers, I'm the runt of the litter, they need the bigger motors more than me. The pipe is more for the noise than anything. It was my Dad's. It was in the back of the shop for years, never knew what it was for. He told me it was for a Sachs 340. I was in junior high at the time, never gave it much thought. It sat in my parts pile for years. At one point I actually gave it away for a Donaldson canister. Stupid!!! Lucky for me, a friend of mine bought it from him, then I had to trade a 340c piston to my friend to get it back. By that time I knew what it was. It's the only rare "race" thing I have.
I will try to post some pictures, haven't figured it it out yet. Stupid!!!

The stinger is back on ebay $1300 bid or a buy it now $1800 I would place a $1300 bid on it if you like it that thing is nice.
