In the summer of 1969 (I was 15 years old) me and my buddies studied the 1970 Scorpion brochure until we had it memorized. We couldn't wait to see the new metalflake red Scorpion Stingers.
The brochure listed an 800 CC engine. We found out through rumors that it was actually a 736cc twin cylinder Sachs. This engine was two 368 cc single cylinders made into a twin (similar to the 744 JLO that was 2 X 372 JLO singles).
We were all Sachs engine lovers and it was our dream that someday we could own the ultimate Sachs engine!
All summer and in to the fall we visited Scorpion dealers and asked them if they had this big Scorpion Stinger in stock for us to inspect (and drool over!).
No Scorpion dealer had even seen one! We thought that as soon as the race season started we would see one on the track.
The whole season went buy and we never saw one.
A few years later my wifes uncle told me that he once saw one sitting on a shelf at the Scorpion factory.
They did exist!
We came to the conclusion that they listed it in the brochure as an engine option but must not have built any Stingers with that engine (for some reason).
Years later I saw a photo of a Scorpion at the Scorpion Homecoming with a 736cc Sachs.
They must have made at least one!
That photo was the first time I had ever seen the engine (after 40 years of looking!). It still made my heart beat faster after all that time.
I felt like I was 15 years old again!
About 4 years ago I was looking at Craigs List under Scorpion snowmobiles. A man in Mankato Minnesota had a long list of parts for sale. At the very end of the list was "740 Sachs For Sale"!!!
I called him ASAP and he sent me photos. I asked him where he bought it and he said it was sitting on a shelf at Scorpion when they went out of business! Maybe it was the one my wifes uncle saw?
I purchased it immediately and he shipped it to me in Los Angeles. I was really excited when it arrived. I was finally going to see my dream engine in person!
When I uncrated it I found that the 736 Sachs was still new, never been started, and the tags were still on the engine!
Now I am in the process of building a bubble nose 736cc Scorpion for myself.
After some exhaustive research I had found out that a total of 30 736 Sachs engines were imported into the western hemisphere.
10 were shipped to Scorpion, 10 were shipped to Rupp and 10 were shipped to Skiroule.
A pretty rare engine I would say!
