Way way too quite on here, what is everybody been doing?
Myself, I have been trying to figure out where and when the first grass drag event is ?
I have a 75 Superstinger motor-less barn fresh junker (perfect grass drag material?) I am thinking it should get a 6 bolt 440 Cuyuna? , or did they come stock with 4 bolt motor?
This one has a real nice free rolling para-rail suspension, and a decent track. I think the original exhaust system is there too. Seams like the exhaust manifold is for a 4 bolt motor, I am just not all that familiar with the 75 models, I think this one is blue, we will find out tomorrow.
Any how I am thinking about getting it out of my shed, clean it up a bit and adding a motor. Problem is, I am getting old, and really don't give a shit anymore! Just want to use up some parts and go beat the hell out of an old Scorp. This is normal, right?

First one for us is in three lakes wi. The 75 supers had 6 bolt angle plug heads.

Three Lakes, looks like about 250 miles for me, hoping to find something closer. I am thinking Hayward, or LaCrosse.
Yes, I was just now paging through the parts book, it appears the 75 Supers were available with all the Cuyuna engines.
I have a real nice 295, and a couple 340,s, could run in F ?
I am assuming the 440 would be E ?

I'm Putting together a 75 whip 400 for grass dragging, 399 Rockwell, Sting pipe,18/38 gears, pararail suspension.
I haven't figured out a clutch for it yet, I'm all out of 102c at the moment, Someone told me that a Kawasaki clutch off and invader grabs real good? anybody have any luck with a 100c from a John Deere?
Here in MI were allowed any production clutch running in the vintage stock class.
Also I'm in the process of trying to make a free flow head on the angle plug head but with a mini hack saw blade it is time consuming. Any suggestions on shaving the heads down for compression?

That will be a good one, do you have letter classes? We can use any clutch, any carb, but must use original exhaust. Sting/Tk pipes can only be used on Sting/TK's
I have the same problem, running out of 102c's. I picked up a couple 108's at the swap meet cheap, I think $45 each. Any how cleaned them up and tried them with whatever spring/weight they came with, they both worked great. Both engage at 4000, and run at 7000 and 7500.
The 108 is 8" tall, and usually set up for 1 3/8". We removed a couple shims and used a 1 1/4" belt. And of course for racing we will use adjustable weights.
As far as cutting heads, compression does make power, but kills the rpms. I like 150#. I had an old 4 bolt one time with 195#, ran it on race gas, it never burned up, we were using a Donaldson muffler, and never let it run past 7200.
That 400 Whip would run in E around here, with the Sting pipe it runs in modified. What do you think about studs on the grass?

From what I read it says original exhaust for the "Brand"? I do have the original Donaldson for it, someone had modified it though, sounds like a dirt bike ,and they turned the outlet to point out the pan instead of towards the track.
I only letter class that I've seen is for ovals. I was going to ask the same thing about studs as this is my first time building a dragger. seems like it would definitely help.
I know Scorps don't have a lot of clearance under them. I do see in our rules, cleats are allowed, but nothing is said about studs? What about ski spreaders? are they allowed by you? Again nothing specific in the rules here?

We only run studs in our "D" stockers.this class is so close you cant have any track spin or you loose. Our F and E class sleds have been holding their own, so we pretty much just maintain them. It seems though that every race we go to someone has a fast D sled. So we work harder on these. Tk's have been tough for us to make fast. It took us years to finally get one faster than a 72-73 super stinger. Gotta be we are slow learners cuz they sure should be faster.

No ski spreaders for drags, you want to be light. I remove the ski shocks and most of the leaf springs.
I see about half the sleds with studs. Our starting lane is usually some rock hard packed clay, and the studs fail to dig in. I am going with no studs, and keep the engagement down to about 4000 hoping not to break loose and spin out badly at the line.

That makes sense, the added weight going with studs too.

I wish I lived up in that area and could participate in these things! I went to the test and tune day of Willow Days in 2013, and played with my '76 JD 300- got radared at 47mph in 500', 295 Kohler twin. Would have been fun to drop some weight, ski shocks, couple of leafs, the plastic console over the motor etc and played with clutching. Don't know what class it would fall in, but I am sure you Scorp guys with all that tuning would have killed me. I think Scorp unwittingly designed the best grass drag suspension ever as far as low drag and weight transfer.

That was a good speed for the 300 JD, that would be about right for the F class. Where are you at?
I am in SE MN, so the Douglass event is only a half hour drive, and Princeton is about 2 1/2
I am pretty sure the Iowa guy's have some grass drags down there, but often it is small events put on by local clubs, and mostly modern sleds.

Weverat, I am in exile...I live in Savannah, Georgia...my wife works right across the street from the very bus bench Forrest Gump sat on in the movie by the same name. I ended up down south after high school and sort of forgot about sleds for about twenty years. Married a southern gal, you can move a northern gal down south, but you can't move a southern gal up north! I work as a marine diesel tech, have about 30 yrs in the field and the 401K is not too bad. So moving back to my ancestral homeland and vintage sled mecca is not happening any time soon. The sled scene really sucks down here. My sleds are up in south eastern Todd county, town of Grey Eagle, kinda near Sauk Center and Long Prairie, east of Little Falls. Chuba country. Folks place is there, I come home each winter good or bad and give 'er hell! I have written a few stories for Vintage Snowmobiler magazine. Short vid of the John Deere, we were up on a summer vacation that year, and my friends from Chisago county were there, I was able to come to the test and tune but could not stay the next day for the actual drags.

Got the 72 stinger II 340 ready for f stock, the 75 whip I'm going through the suspension, but that will be ready for E stock, the 634 stinger will run 71 and older stock class I'm curious how it will do against the 440 Sachs engines, and my newest sled is set up for ice (one lunger), and I got a future project I'm going to get the chassis painted this spring. 71 Wide track. Just saving up for the right motor for it.

That's great! If we can get everyone to go, we will have 15 or so Scorpions.

Yup, I am in. OBJ- concerning those studs on the grass, I suppose they work, but man they must lose their edge on the first run!
Dammit, you know I am a ice racer, and we are super careful to keep them razor sharp, and as long as possible. Can we just throw some 3/4" long picks in there and call it macaroni? They will become just rounded off little stubs right a way! But are you saying they work, and in the D class, we need them for sure?
