Hi All,
My 1980 Whip 440 Walbro WF carb is givng me a hard time. The idle mixture screw on the carb needs to be turned out at least 3 to 4 turns for the sled to stay running smoothly at idle. The idle speed also needs to be set high at 3K RPM. It will start and run for a short while when its turned out 1 1/2 to 2 turns and then it will just die.
Then when you're ridng it will be going along fine and then she starts to bog / die until you feather the throlte and then it runs fine again for a few more minutes until you need to feather the gas again. It seems to happen more when going up or downhill. The sled also acts like it wants to stall when the sled is stopped quickly.
I pulled out the fuel pickup tube under the fuel pump and cleaned the 3 holes in the tube and the 2 ports that are under the fuel pump at the top of the carb, but the problem remains. Anyone have any idea where the carb may be blocked up or what the problem might be?
Thanks... Scorp80
P.S. Tank was cleaned and filled with new gas mixed at 40:1

I was having the same problem with my 1977 400 whip, changed out the carbs 3 x the coils twice ,then I changed the engine problem fixed, now too pull the engine apart and find the problem ,possibly seals.(engine was rebuilt when I purchased it but not by me)

lots of possible issues without knowing more. It sounds fuel related.
Make sure the carb has been cleaned. Sounds a lot like a dirty carb. Could be some issues with the line in the tank or the fuel pump as well.
It could also be seal related, but check the carb first.

yep sounds like dirty carb. oreilly auto parts carries carb cleaner in a gallon can. even comes with a dip basket. take carb apart and soak all parts including carb. I usually go overnight. stuff works wonders!

Can you tell me how many fuel port holes and air bleed holes need to be cleaned in the Walbro WF carb and where they are all located? If it makes a difference, the carb I have only has the one idle mixture screw.
Thx

I can't. Me and WF carbs have agreed to disagree when it comes to getting along. I echo the carb soak though, but it will require you to disassemble the whole carb.
There are others who like them, Chip (ScorpionTKX) is one you might ping for help. He likes them carbs :-)

I had the same problem. I took out the idle jet screw and blew air through the carb. That seems to fix it.

yea definatly blow all the passages out with a can of carb cleaner and then compressed air. I got a kit from dennis kirk and rebuilt my WF. It was easy. and ran good after. scorp80, are your plugs fouling out? like you are too rich?
