...all that snow and you have to work on your days off...I bet thoughts of retirement entered your mind a few times today .
Rene if it wouldn't be for the health insurance cost's i would retire next year when my wife does, she is 4 years older then me. but i have 5 more years to work. i don't mind working on my days off because the extra money goes into my play time fund, it's just the 5 guys i ride vintage with, were sending me pictures all day of them out riding. rick

i was going to spend the day in the shop getting the 79 whip running, joe (crosscut) was going to help me get the timing set right but i had to spend 10 hours moving cars and plowing the lot at the cadillac dealership i work at. the guy that normally does it just had knee surgery and i said i would cover for him the next couple of weeks. we got about a 12'' of snow on the ground and i could not even go out for a ride because i was plowing. it is still snowing at 5:00 p.m. so i will have to back tomarrow and clean up the lot again.

i have been a cadillac technition for almost 40 years,i can rebuild a 32 valve double over head cam northstar engine blindfolded. i have 8 scorpions with ccw's in them that i clean the points and re-time every fall and have never had a problem but getting the engine timed.with the 79 whip i just finished it is starting to pee me off. i have done it buy the book, i have pm'ed obj1, i have had the engine in and out of the sled 4 times and it is still not right. my shop is 200 feet from the house and my wife heard me cussing and yelling and ran out to see if i was hurt. i took a couple of days off from working in the shop just to clear my head. i am going to work on it saturday morning, please pray for me.

Well, we got just enough snow to go and try out the MX Beast !
I had it out and ran it for ~ 65 klm (40 miles).
It went great with no issues.
The new drive sprockets and nitrogen shock worked out well...I can't really compare it to the old hydraulic one as I never rode with it. All I know is that it rides smoothly as is.
The windshield does a good job and the opening behind the cowl keeps the engine area cool and the rider warm...win, win! I'll be ordering a new shield as this one looks yellow compared to the new hood colour.
I ran the carb two jet sizes richer than recommended for the temp of 0c (32f), one size up for running without the air box and another one for break in .
I ran 20:1 conventional oil for initial break in.
I'm now switching over to 40:1 synthetic.

you need to attach a puller to those 3 holes and heat up the gear, it is pressed on with a special tool.

i was going to not start any new sleds this winter, but because of the summer like weather we are having,62 degrees today, i ended up sand blasting and painting my 71 stinger chassis and my 70 markII chassis.then i tore both motors down to see what i needed to round up for parts.now i have 2 full blown restorations going on at the same time.

75 and 76 lil whips did not have pararail, its straight up bogies, but I'm curious enough I'm going to take a look the 73 290 et is a boogie wheel system, not para-rail.

i am only bringing this up because it happened to me on my 73 290 et. make sure the boogie wheels start with 3 at the front then 2 then 3 then 2. my 73 290 et were backwards 2-3 2-3 and the rear 3 were rubbing on the rear idlers causing a bad vibration over 20 mph.

this was a known problem with that design, back when these were 3 or 4 years old we would have to weld that tapered shaft in place.

i was able to get 2 of these fittings 42640 and gasket 874691 from certified parts about 2 years ago. email diane at dianej@certifiedpartscorp.com with the part numbers, it will take up 48 hours for her to get back to you.

i went and looked at my 79 whip tach wiring and on my tach there is a orange wire that goes to a union with yellow/red wire that goes to the voltage regulator.these 2 wire connect to a yellow/green wire that goes to one end of the lighting coil. the other wire on my tach is orange/black and that goes to a yellow wire coming off the other side of the lighting coil.the brown and the yellow wires on mine are for the back lighting. since the tach reads the lighting coil pulses for rpm i would test the output of the lighting coil or if you can test the tach on another sled.

you will have to locate and buy the parts you need seperately, there is no complete kits for these engines. when i rebuilt my 79 whip engine i located pistons and gasket and seal kits on ebay.
