I like the exhaust dumping out the handle bars!, but I Have never seen it run, will it be at Waconia this year?

Give that Duster a try, they work. Give it a good beating, I mean testing, read the tach for engagement, and full throttle rpm. Feel the power and see if the tach holds steady at speed. Record all this and then try the scorp clutch. I mean the clutch is on there, let's see what it does.
The wood burning tractor is way cool!

I am easy to find, we park on the ice, behind the swap meet. Unbelievable, coolest thing I have ever seen! Take this for a ride, and your coveralls will smell like an old snowmobile forever, imagine the fumes, maybe it's vented and works ok, who owns it ? Who is the owner/builder of this sled ?

Anybody made any progress on a sled for this class? I am interested, but to many projects right now, possibly start working on Sachs motors in March after the riding season, of course by then who knows what pops up for projects.
I lost a little time playing with a Polaris Colt, which came to me by chance, and wound up on my bench. It was a 1 owner garage kept, clean, strait, low mileage sled. But of course it needed a piston, and the drive wheels were like egg shells. As I rolled the track, chunks of wheel would fall out.
And, then a Skidoo Elan SS showed up, so we fixed it, and it is a cool sled.
Now it,s Jack race time so we have another colt, and a Lynx to touch up and load for the Lemans race, and then we load the ice draggers for Waconia the following weekend.
I probably will not campaign the Stinger II this year, as we have 3 other sleds to run, just not enough time and room.
We are running a 440 Exciter in the stock D class, and a Massey, yes Massey wide track no less in the F class, it has a 440 JLO. And of course the experimental Free Air Bubble will make a few runs.
I have found with racing, it takes a few outings to get a sled truly up to speed, basically every event is a test session for us, eventually things work out.

Stingerater, I was wondering if you have been on this site lately? You finally chime in.
Did you see the Free Air Bubble Thread? I am hoping to bring it to the Jack if we have room, thought I might test it on the radar run track.
Yes, I need the Super Stinger chassis, and a hood from Jack, absolutely let,s do it. You know I have tracks, drive shafts, etc. Can I use a para-rail, or does it need to be bogies for period correctness?

I just missed a 400 Sting for sale in Sanborn, Mn Wondering who bought it, and if it has a cleated track. I have a nice 79 440 Sting, rubber track, para-slide, I will trade for a 400 with cleats

Now you know how to clean points and set timing, you love resurrecting vintage sleds, it's a sickness, you have the bug!
The condensers were a long shot, I had never replaced any in over 30 years, until just lately. It was an old Kohler single with weak spark, hard start, pig. The condenser brought it to life, now a good starting (user friendly) little motor.
You see back in the day our vintage sleds were only 20 years old, now they are 40 to 50. I see a few dry and brittle crank seals now too.
John deers are damm ugly, and they suck, I had one in my stable, and promptly got rid of it before it multiplied. Stick with Big Red.

I am pretty sure your internal coil is ok, you do have spark on one side? The big thick coil and one of the small coils are for lights, the other small coil is for the ignition.
Do the wires connected to the points have the little plastic insulators in place correctly ?

Ok, the one with the cleated track, if it was a 400, it would be a ringer in the Stock E ice drags at Waconia.
As a 440 it can almost win the coveted and most prestigious D class. Just a few tweaks and we are there!
Nice score there Railman, and Bubba.

Your saying still no spark on one side?
You can leave the advance spring on, reach into the flywheel with your finger and hold the weight in full advance position, whilst turning flywheel, looking at dial indicator, and getting a buzz, I mean listening to the buzz. It is tight be you can do it.
Set advance timing at .100-.110 BTDC.
I am actually not that brave, I set mine at .090-.095 Just my style
There are two black wires coming from the points, they are kill wires, going to ignition switch and kill button. Touch these two together to kill the motor. It's a long shot, but try disconnecting the wire harness plug from the motor, thus isolating the entire harness and eliminating any bad switches etc.
Need some help here Guy's
af4sos has spark on one side, so the ignition source coil must be ok? I guess we need to verify that both coils and condensors are working. It sounds like both sets of points are making contact ?
Do the Stings have a throttle safety kill, like the old Cats.?

I went back and checked out that thread, and the exhaust project. Did you have a muffler shop flair the pipe?, Did you weld the stainless yourself? I bet it works good, you do very nice work.

Yup, I agree with Obj, Pull the flywheel, do it right the first time and be done with it. Resurrecting old sleds requires patience.
I like to use the original points, remove, mount in vice, sand with 600 grit, polish with semi-chrome or mothers, clean with brake clean and a white business card, be sure to oil pin. Check for contact with a meter.
Set points at .015, set timing from there. You have to adjust the gap to get both cylinders spot on.
I use a buzzer rather than a light, and of course a dial indicator. A bit tricky with angle plug heads, sometimes I remove them, or give the heads a (Star Prairie Tweak)
If you want it to start easy replace the condensers, it's a pain in the neck, but these sleds are old, and condensers only last 34 years ?
Setting timing is almost my favorite thing to do, as a vintage sledder you to will enjoy this exercise !

Twin carbs are nice, straitens out the air flow, sometimes allows you to mount the carbs closer to the cylinder, looks cool, allows for separate adjustments.
Good for high performance engines, our little stuff runs darn nice with one carb.

Wow, lots of replies on this post.
I agree not enough information, firm on price, and I could see nothing special in the pics. I imagine if you were energetic, and wanted to sell parts at swaps etc,
And I did not see any mufflers to cut

www.ebay.com/itm/321050630779?_trksid=p2055119.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AITDid you guy's see this parts deal on E-bay. The parts are in Owatonna, just an hour drive for me. It looks like a bunch off tired iron, and you know I love junk ! It is just too much stuff I would never get used or sold, as I am not into vending at swap meets, or e-bay. Plus it sounds like the guy is firm on his price. Now, if the guy would except $900 and 3 or 4 of us were partner up, and divide the parts, it might to fun.

We would have to cut them open and compare to the RTX pipe

I have 3 of those old 440 c motors from the SkiRoules. I have been waiting for a reason to restore one. Thought I would disassemble all 3 and build a best of.
I also have a set of suitcase style twin exhaust as used on the RTX, and Speedway. I believe they were a factory option on the 71 stingers ? If we want to beat him fair and square, we use the Donaldson ( might be good enough)
It would be even better if we all built a sled for this class, in a fashion that the Cat does not even make the final!

The Kohler 440 AS was ok, as used in Trail Twisters, and Herters Snow Falcon, but the old 440 2 ax was nothing special. Unless your looking for parts, then their dam special.
What about the Sachs 440 twin ? I have never played with them.
I am thinking plug it into a dual inlet Donaldson with flex pipe, Use a later model para Rail, comet clutch with adjustable weights, and a 38mm Mikuni That would be as close to stock as we can get. I mean the thing is 35 years old.
