I bought one brand new in 87. Very warm to ride and good power. I really liked it. Yours might have been warm 'cus it had a barn door for a windshield.
Mine's probably faster 'cus it's got that stylish racing one!
A guy at my last vintage ride asked me, "What'd you do to your windshield?". I informed him that I kept hacking away at the ugly 'till it was almost all gone. I'm not sure if it looks better or worse than stock, wait, it can't possibly look worse!

Those 6 nuts on top only hold the head on, you can take those on and off as much as you want. The cylinder studs and nuts stick out the bottom, and they hold the cases together. The cylinder base gaskets tend to leak, so you have to keep the nuts tight. Ohhhhhh! I'll check that out as I've already removed the engine but still have it on the engine plate. I'll snug them up tomorrow.
I've cleaned and inspected the bulkhead area and all is good with no stress cracks.
The secondary clutch has no slider cam shoe thingees, I'll need some new ones.
The pan has a 2 inch hole with 2 cracks, one about 5 inches long. I can plastic weld the cracks, use a hole saw to make a nice 2.5 in circular hole and go from there. Either weld in a round patch or fabricate an aluminium one or something along that line. I can always keep an eye out at swap meets for a better pan for future installment.
Any and all suggestions are welcome.
Thanks weverat, you and others here are being very helpful.

weverat, so after rereading your post, this is what I gather...if I were to disturb the head/cylinder assembly I would need to reseal the cylinder bases with the engine on the bench and THEN remount it onto the motor plate. This is after retorquing the engine several times and perhaps putting it through some type of heat cycle first. WOW...I can see why it's best to leave these engines alone unless you are willing to go all the way. I'm okay with all of this...great information!
I just went and checked out the engine. If I were to pre mark the engine plate to know exactly where to reset it, I can have it out in a jiffy (do people still say that?) and back in in a jiffy and a half.
Thank you oh Wise One. Rene

Here's the engine compartment. The speedo says 865 miles. I had the carb apart and checked it all out and it was clean.
I set it up. It starts first pull and runs very nicely. I'm on the fence on whether I should take it apart and give it a full checkup and reseal it, including centre crank seal or do a minor check by removing cylinders and inspect, or just remove intake and exhaust manifolds and take a look?
What are your opinions ?
I say leave it alone and run it. Best to leave a good running cuyuna alone. Thanks 75whip.
You guys know Cuyunas and I'm willing to learn.
I'll leave it be and see how she runs.
I appreciate all of the advice you guys are willing to give out...this forum is turning out to be GREAT!

Thanks weverat...I hadn't mentioned it but I've retorqued them already. I guess great minds think alike or is it, like minds think great...
So I gather that the centre seals generally hold up?
Can you imagine the embarrassment my wife'll feel having to ride on the back of a Ski Doo Stratos if that Cayuna has a burn down?!!!
I'll wait and see how it runs this coming winter and reassess then.
I'm not new to this stuff but I know nothing about Scorpions and Cuyunas.
Thanks again for your insight.

whenever my wife complains about my sleds or my time in my shop i just ask her, do you want me at home where you can see me or in a bar chasing large breasted women. My wife's a keeper as SHE's the one that recommended I get another snowmobile project!
I KNOW!!!!...she's a keeper!

Welcome 80sting440. The vintage sled disease is real and very contagious. I have it, I started out with my 75 whip, and now I got 6 old scorpions in my garage. Engines all over the place. hey there is way worse things you can be addicted to. Yeah, like Ski Doos!
Thanks for the warm welcome 75whip.

Yes, it's a mdl # 503, 499cc. It's a nice engine but hard to pull over at -35. I first have to loosen the belt, heat up my propane torch inside the house, remove sparkplugs, heat pistons, cylinders and plugs with flame, prime it just right, cross my fingers and toes and pull like the dickens. I'm the only guy I know that can build up a sweat at minus 35! But NOW that I have the Sting, I'll just simply use it as my wife is not foolish enough to venture out on a snowmobile in those temps (she's the brains of this operation, I simply get by on charm and good looks).
ps. weverat, I love your signature!

It's an '87 Ski Doo Stratos...it's Canadian eh!
I chose this sled because it had a soft ride and that ugly duckling kind of looks.

You can cut them off, but they eject them selves automatically when there shot. Then of course you have to pull motor to fit a good new used one. Slide it on from the re-coil side and right over the whole engine, this way you do not have to remove the clutch guard. The motor mount plate has to come off of course. Enjoy! Wev, are you sure you're not Canadian, 'cus that's one of our tricks up here in Canuk land.

Do you mean where do we live, or where are we ? I am in SE MN. You are right, it is quite on here in the summer. Some of these guys are shy to post, but you should here them rattle when you meet them in person. Some members give there location in the profile. Something about the internet, bloggers like to remain somewhat anonymous, never using real names, and rarely do they post pics of themselves. Makes it hard at events to figure out who is who. I'll be the old fellow sporting a beard...I should be a standout

Finally. Another like minded Scorpion guy who isn't 2500km away. Bring that bad boy to our rally near Saskatoon next February. And lets see some pics! Heck yeah...only 786 kms apart...practically neighbours!
Saskatchewan has a much stronger vintage snowmobile scene than here in Manitoba.
Which rally is this and on what day in February?

Just wanted to say hello to all Scorpionites on this vintage sled site.
I've recently purchased a 1980 Sting from a nice fellow in Minnesota. I'll be going over the sled to turn it into a "refreshed" and reliable one. It will become my wife's vintage rider.
Looking forward to seeking your expert answers to my yet unasked questions!

Is this your first Scorpion ? The Sting is a great piece, definitely one of my favorites. Can you post some pics, tell us how you found it etc. Welcome to the site. Hi weverat. Yes this is my first and I think I've been stung! It reminds me somewhat of my first snowmobile purchase in '73...an El Tigre' 400 in that it's light weight, low to the ground, easy to pull start and simple to work on.
I found it being listed on vintagesleds.com.
Thanks for the warm welcome.
ps. I'm holding a 4"x6" photo in my hand that was given to me by the previous owner...hmmm...if only there was a way that I could load it into this coffee cup tray thingee on the side of my laptop...
