Okay I deleted my last post. I over reacted and needed some professional advise on this. Well I talked to my buddy today Auto Body guy, and he showed up tonight. Laughed his Ass off at me for the job I did, eveything I am doing is the hack way, but he said we will work with it. Sanded the whole damn hood down stated with 100 all the way to 600 then wet sanded. Only had half a quart left of clear. Then I got laughed at again because I have used a quart and a half when he said that little thing should only take a half quart max. then he said I am using too thin of a clear, but said we will work with it. well its not going to turn out perfect but its turning out. Hes showing me little tricks and short cuts, and even though I am still doing all myself someone there with knowledge is priceless.

Im kinda mad as of right now. I took it for a grass run today up the side of the drive way. boggy as all hell at first. two things I dont like the clutch engages right away, and I thought the spring felt pretty weak when i was pressing down on it after i cleaned it, next I did a compression test 105 lbs. Not good especially for a 340ss. I got alot of tuning to do. may need new rings too.

Yes the original clutches do engage very easy. You have to hold the break even at an idle. Your motor should have about 155 lbs. I have work on a fair amount of the Sachs singles, if you would ever want help I would be happy to do so. You have a very cool sled. I have always liked the 72' stinger II 340 single. Looks good!!!

When I picked up my first Sachs SA290 single,it had a 110 lbs of compression.NOW 6 years later,guess what,still a 110 lbs.The thing runs like a scalded gorilla. 75 whip,it takes practice & more practice,when it comes to painting & body work.I remember,when I started painting cars,back in 1968.First one was ok,but they kept getting better the more I did it.Don't give up,ask questions & do it.You'll do just fine.Have fun.

75whip, Are you using the Powerthrust clutch in this photo?

I guess I never mentioned what clutch I am using. I put the power thrust I clutch on it I had laying around, I did not use the power thrust II in the pic because The stock clutch cover would not fit over it. and I wanted to stay as stock as possible, but i also have a comet duster too I can use. I am open to opinions on this even if I have to modify the clutch cover. I did that on my 70 stinger to run a power thrust II on the 634.
Stinge4me I think my bogging problem is the low compression. I am new to these ss singles. my 634 hirth has like 110 lbs of compression in each cylinder, however that thing is a totally different beast. I know these things have a high compression ratio compared to other sachs engines, and if you need a piston you will pay out the #%$ for one. The thing is once the rpms get going it goes, and it is fast for a one banger. Its just from stop until it get going i have the bogging problem, So i am for sure open for your help sounds like you have been aroung these for sometime now

Nitroking72 yep painting is another trade. Im glad I have someone to turn to for help on this, i am getting better, but admin you asked me what I think of it. well I am my own worst critic no matter what. But im am getting better. Once I get the stinger II emblems on it I think it will look good. you have to see it in person there are imperfections in the clear, and you can see it in the sun, but this sled will be a rider I dont do trailer queens so It works for me. I wanted to get it out on the grass drags, but we will have to see about the engine first. It starts easy and idles great.

75whip, when was the most recent time you took the carb all apart and cleaned everything?
How many turns out are your low and high speed jets?

Started out at 1 each idle seems best at under 1 turn, not sure yet with high speed. Alot changed today. First I took the head off and soaked it all night in oil cleaned it off today rechecked same 105 lbs tried another comperssion gauge. 130 lbs?? hummm. I took the power thrust I off and repalced it with a power thrust II, modified the clutch cover. took it out and pulls the skis off the ground, and moved real good. not sure how far it will pull i dont have enough room here to find out. The only thing i have had is the needle inside was stuck open when I first tried to start it and it did it again today. I only replaced the gaskets in the fuel pump when i cleaned it, I have always reused original needle jets and springs when i clean these. I dont trust Chinese crap.

Yes I have problems with the needle sticking from time to time. I have put new ones in and it seems to help, but they will stick as well. As long as the rubber cone on the needle is not too swollen you should be fine. I also noticed in the picture that your head is on backwards. It doesn't change the performance any it just looks funny. The torque specks on the head is 25 ft lbs.
Good luck!

Guy I brought it from thought it looked cool, I thought it looked stupid! anyway I replaced everything in the carb and its working alot better windersoa kit. Tends to load up and bog if i let it idle for awhile and punch it. Thinking new plug. trying to located some nos Bosch plugs for it, found they work best in my hirth in my other sled, may be the same for sachs? or is it this f-in muggy hot weather we have been getting!
