I scored a JLO Free Air 440, complete with Aaen pipes, and twin Mikunis,and it has spark on both cylinders. This would be a great engine for a 71 Super Stinger, which I do not have. I guess I will have to start building a clone ?. I will probably just stick it in a 71 stinger chasis for now, and call it macaroni.
Acording to my research, these motors were never used in anything, unlike the 3 cylinder JLO, which was used in a few King Kats. I guess the 440 FA was just a prototype ?

Nice sled there pararailer, I am interested in how you made the hood hinges, I have a similar project - 71 stinger with bubble nose conversion, but I am unsure how to make the hinge. Hope to see everybody at Princeton.

The Snow Flakes actualy come to Waconia every year, about 1200 miles from Saskatoon. Great bunch of guy's, party hard and vintage sleds all the way.
I broke down right out front of their trailer, kinda late, but they were still up, and going hard.
A guy named recoil fixed my recoil, while I was tasting the Canadian Whisky. Then we test drove the shit out of all the sleds. Another Cat, I think his name is Blair, was definetly a highly skilled free style vintage sledder.

Wow, Great pictures, awesom project, keep us posted.
I do not have a cowling for it either. I may be going to a junk yard this weekend, I will look.
Chip will have the rollers for the clutch, and yup, it will probaly be a creeper. Sometimes I shim the spring just a little, seems to help. I have a bunch of springs, but they are way to stiff.

Yes, the wires on the coils are supposed to be opposite, exactly as Scorp 11's picture. The coils have 2 terminals marked 1 and 15. Two wires from points, one goes to 15 and the other to the other coil but connects to the #1 side. Ground the rest.

Stingerator hit the nail on the head, always new fresh gas. If the gas is more then 8 weeks old siphon it out and put it in your truck. I mean real gas, not moonshine. 91 ethanol free.
I have a set of spark plugs with the gap opened up to .080 I use to check for good spark. It should jump that much and still be a nice blue spark, if not your condensers are suspect.
Oh the other thing, I do not use resitor stile spark plugs, or caps, not sure if it makes any difference.

We will be there all weekend, camping on the ice. It's a black 24' trailer with big yellow decals " Motorville Garage " Be sure to stop and see us. We are not racing the Stinger at Waconia as we got hung up on other projects and failed to get it ready. No big deal, we will race at Waseca and Okoboji. I am helping another guy campaign a 76 Rupp FA, it has been an interesting project, anxious to see how it does. Parts are rare for the Kohler free air motors, I would much rather run Cuyuna's.
Not sure if this forum has a spall chekc, maybe I just can't find it ?

yup, I here you, always a problem with oval racing, by the time you get enough ski pressure to turn, you spin out bad at the start. Often there is a max stud length of 3/8 above the track lug, realy makes for an interesting puzzle.
You know back in the day they would rig the suspension to be adjusted on the fly. Leave the front down for hole shot, and crank it up for the first turn, fine tune on the fly. I have never actually seen this set up, but have herd of it. This would not be legal for most clubs, but if your just racing on a pond with your buddies ?

Are you drag or oval, ice or grass?
I am thinking about ice draging my 77 Sting, and was wondering if there is room for studs?
For ice drags we leave the front of the skid down, and then play with the clutches, with out even thinking about the rear spring tension. I guess we run the springs pretty tight. I am thinking light springs on the rear would cause ski-lift(weight transfer).
Is there a spell hcek?

I spotted Stingerator and Tom Cat at The Jack Race in Clear Lake Iowa yesterday. Stingerator had one of his Superstingers, this one has the 800 Hirth ( correct me if I,m wrong Tom ). It was so cool, and Tom was happy to fire it up (2 pulls !) and let us take it for a ride on the lake. Three tuner pipes, crazy loud, and way fun to beat around. It seemed to have a lot of power, it would spin the 18" track very easily at any speed. Tom has done a great job of leaving the original patina, and letting the sled be what it is. He has it set up as a everyday rider, not a gilded lilly, but truly a usable piece. It is by fay the coolest sled I have ever riden. Ok, his other sled is a xx1650 with the factory megs, we rode that one too! It also starts easily, and is a daily runner. We ran a couple of 1972 Lynx 295's and a Colt in the Lemans race. There was one guy named Josh running a 71 Scorp with a CCW 340 in the race, and he finished in the top five. He was into Scorps, but did not Know about this site. Then there were a couple of Whips and a TK in the 1985 and older class.

You can drill 3/16" holes in the ramp and bend the end of the spring, then it is adjustable. I normaly run 10 to 14 pounds of tension, sometimes even less. Not really all that fun to be changing very often. Seems to take two guy's, one to hold everything and the other to put the snap ring on.
I have even drilled and tapped the end of the shaft to recieve a 5/16" bolt, eliminating the snap ring. This way I was able to shim the driven pulley open enough to run the 1 3/8" polaris belt and clutch. I suppose the polaris clutch could be shimmed to fit the 1 1/4" belts ?

Oh ya, they flex like crazy, open hood, sled on stand, rev and watch the exhaust pop right off the manifold. My stinger III ia a 1972, maybe scorp rectified this on later models?

I agree, must be a problem with the rings. There may have been some rust in the cylinder, and it could have worn the rings, let us know what you find.
We have a little 250 rotax twin apart right now, and the rings on it have lost all their tension, they almost fall right through the bore.
Do we have a spell check, I don't see it

I was pondering the same thing as my Stinger III has a 400 CCW, it does not shake to bad at idle, but when you rev it hard the long 18" motor mounts give enough to cause the exhaust head pipe to slide off the manifold !
The exhaust system needs to be mounted in a fashion allowing lots of flex.

In my circle of vintage sledders, I also get points for the black duct tape upholstery job!
The little scorp has 13 - 32 gears, single row chain, probably goes 40, but has enough power to spin the track at will ( rear steer )

Resurrected old Purple Power today, my favorite Scorp! I think it is a 73 Stinger 290. Has a CCW290, purple metal flake, 15" track. Anyhow, it is a great little little sled, light weight, easy pull rope, starts easy, user friendly, takes a beating. We drug the thing all the up to Elephant Lake last March, and it broke a drive wheel on the first day,so I was stuck having to horse a 440 Sting around for rest of the week.

Ok, I'm still a bit confused?.
The center plug 6 bolt did not happen till 79.
Was there a point when all Cuyuna's became 6 bolt?.
All the whips I have seen have 4 bolt motors, but at some point did they get the 6 bolt affair as well?

What were the 6 bolt Cuyunas, and Rockwells used on besides the Stings, and TK,s ?
I used to think the 4 bolt motors were discontinued in about 1975 (Whips), and all motors were now 6 bolt. I now realize the whips were 4 bolt.
What about the Masseys ?
When were the 6 bolts first used ?
