Have you or can you find a donor engine. Is there a sled salvage yard in your area?
Find any old JLO, Rockwell, or Cuyuna, and rob the points, and hardware items from it. Your local salvage yard might even have a partially disassembled engine laying there, or better yet, one that is locked up.
Bring your flywheel puller with.
Do you know how to set the point gap and timing?
By the way, the used points will be better than the new ones from the aftermarket, just clean them up good.
Keep us posted, and post a pic of that bad ass Sting!

Howdy there SledRat,
We like pictures, and real easy to do here. There is a quick reply, and a reply button. Use the reply button, click Add Attachment, upper right hand corner, upload and insert.
I noticed some of my old Sachs singles have a drain valve near the bottom of the cases. I guess it is there to drain a badly flooded engine, it could be replaced with a plug.

Good gas tank sealer It is now a roller, Para-rail fits good Chassis is sand blasted and primed, I will do "a little" filling and sanding, and then off to the painter for gloss black.

Engine donor sled. This project is killing several birds for me as I am able to get rid of some junk, and cherry pick just the goodies. Might craigs list the TX with no motor, rather than bone it out, as I have no use for Polaris parts. It is a good strait chassis, nice skis etc. The Polaris guys will snatch it right up! I have been ripping it around the yard some, but waiting for snow in order to give it one last good beating before robbing the engine.

$350.00 ?
With out researching, I am thinking it is worth 300 to 750
It would be a shame to restore it, and remove all that patina. I would just get it greased, oiled, and running.
If you were to run it much, it would need a track.
Get it!

Definitely a different project for me, and as usual I will be winging it, and just using whatever I have, kind of like pottery?
I do not foresee any problem fitting the TX engine in there, and I will probably use the wire harness from the TX as well. I think it will be a simple build, the exhaust will be experimental. Dam, I love screwing around with pipes!
I am really anxious to try the Double Donaldson with this motor. The donor TX is a complete running machine with it's original single tuner pipe/muffler, so I will be able to test the as is performance before transplant.

No doubt those 71 supers were but ugly, I am not out of the woods yet.
I am planning on using a TX 340 or 440 engine, I actually have one of each, the 340 is a good runner and the 440 needs a rebuild, so we will see how motivated I get. Thinking about possibly using a double Donaldson with a pair of flex pipes to start with.
Maybe mess around with some tuner pipes at a later date. The problem will be getting tuners to fit the narrow chassis with a tunnel mount engine? And then getting the pipes to actually make power.
You know those TX engines only ran at 7000, I think the 440 was only 6750, so they are not ported for high rpm tuners. I imagine the guy's that race them probably raise the exhaust port and run them at 8000 or so?
I might go to the other site and see what the Vintage sled guy's say?

I this case the mounting location for the Para Rail comes for free, along with the entire panel. This is a totally new type of project for me, but I kind of got tired of rebuilding motors, and playing with clutches. Not saying I would do this again, but it has been fairly painless, and a lot of fun. I can't wait to get the finish paint on the tunnel, and begin assembly.

Here is what is left of my donor chassis, the missing parts are now a 71 Super! The other day I cut the gas tank open, blasted the inside of the tank clean, and welded it shut. Tonight I plan to coat the inside of the tank with some 2 part epoxy tank sealer from Caswell (really good shit) I have used this sealer on motorcycle tanks, in this case, I get to roll around the whole sled in order to coat all surfaces, we are talking maybe 2 or 3 Heinekens and some cheap Bud Light (for my neighbor). That is if his ol'lady will let him come over.

Here is my swiss cheese chassis, not a problem, but actually an opportunity to bond with my grinders and welders.

Or is it a Ski-Whip? You did find a project, and it is looking way better. You are right, those Stratos,s were just damned ugly, but your doing the right thing.
Now if we can come up with a cool paint job and some graphics.
How about a giant Heineken decal wrap that covers the entire hood ?

Rene - Didgya find a new project to start on, or do I need to come up there and insulate your garage?
Buy the way, do you have snow, I mean enough to go for a ride?

I actually got one of those stubborn pricks apart tonight. I picked up a 73 Stinger II from a salvage yard, to be used as a donor sled for my 71 Super Stinger project. Last weekend I began the harvest, and to my surprise the whole sled came apart with out a hack saw, grinder, or smoke wrench. I scored a real nice para rail suspension and track. Any how tonight I attempted to pull the shafts from the weldment, all the shafts were almost free, and very easy to crack loose and remove. But then that darn roll pin that holds the shock mount in place, it was tough, and required 2 more Heinekens, but it did finally drive out. The Super Stinger chassis is at the sandblast/paint shop.

Denis Kirk, Fowler, E-bay, Central snowmobile supply, Parts Unlimited, Or maybe your local aftermarket, vintage sled repair shop should have them, they are a common part, and fit several different engines.
The thing is though, nobody likes the aftermarket points, they never seam to fit, and work as good as the old original Boch points. Original Boch points are hard to find.
We usually just sand the old ones, dam hard to do on the sled. If you have the stator plate out, you can clean them up nice. start with 220, work way down to 600 or 1000 grit, and then I usually polish them with semi chrome. Clean them up with brake parts cleaner, and a clean white business card. Then check them with a continuity tester.
Need to rule out the wiring harness and switches first. If you unplug the harness from the engine, you should have spark, this is always the first test.
Get that thing running man, snows a coming!

The 503,s make good power, and they have twin carbs. I do not know how well it would fit in the sting, and the pipe would have to be adjusted, or maybe modify the exhaust manifold and use a Sting pipe. Of course the next problem is getting all this to fit under the hood.
Dantheman - By all means check out the links to the threads within 80sting440's post, if you click on the pictures they get bigger.
I have an 80 Sting which is chewing up drive wheels, and we think the problem with mine is it has an aftermarket track with the word Quimpex stamped in it. I am thinking we need to find the right track, otherwise I might convert mine to a Para-rail from a Whip, which might be a problem because I think the Whip track and suspension is a bit longer?
80sting440 has his Para-slide working really nice.

Rene, your going off the deep end ,you need to start another sled project, maybe go for those grease zerks.
Better yet, find an old tunnel mount Stinger, junk out the old CCW and stick a 503 in there, add a bunch of studs, carbide runners, and go raise hell on the lake!
oh ya, Dantheman, welcome to the site

Looking at Comet book, I see the K2s for 80 Sting, and B-1 for almost all of the Stings, TKs, and Whips. And then they have F-2 for the 340 Whips.
What is the difference between the K2, B1, and A1
