got the crank back today, new bearings, and balanced. was going to assemble it then found out I got a complete gasket set that was not complete. No crankcase gasket, yea that's helpful. also got the sa297 back bored to 74mm, and replaced the needle bearing with a regular bearing? dont know what the bearing is, but the machinist i use has done many like this.

If i remember right a 1" of rain is like 10" of snow? My wife said we got 7 1/4" man over 70" of snow. My driveway is 800' long god that would suck to plow. Now 70" over the winter, the old scorpions would be getting used alot😎

Same here, have not got the sachs back from the machine shop yet, so the 70 stinger just sits there, i was going to work on clutching this weekend, by running my 75 and 72 out on the hay feild this weekend, and with the 6 inches of rain last night that may not happen since i would be water skipping out there. Hard to figure out clutching with that. Lol i may just have to cross my fingers that in close with that.

I was trying to make it up there, On our way back from Nebraska the south Dakota state patrol had interstate 29 shut down due to a tornado/flash flood warning north of souix falls, ended up staying the night in souix falls, did not get going till 9 the next morning, and It looked like it was going to storm up there so I just headed back home, I was hauling a horse trailer so it was slow going anyway. Hopefully next year, glad to see one starting up this time of year in MN. sucked i wanted to come check it out.

Lol and i said f-it run it. You never know what the prevuous owner did thats for sure. Hey im glad you did take it apart before you ended up being "that guy" on a ride I want to make it clear that I really don't believe that it was the last guy and even if he had done this, I'm fine with that.
He is a straight shooter and a good fellow.
He has quite a few Scorps and some of them need work.
I suspect from some of the things he's said that he bought this sled in need of tlc.
This machine has changed hands several times.
I'm sure that he reads this forum and he may even be a member. It's all good.
Back to you 75 whip...I know that you and two other guys advised me to "Just run it". That was good advice considering the info that I gave you. Yes, you never know what some of the previous owners have done. For me, this is getting to be a pleasurable hobby as it gives me purpose in my retired years.
I'm more concerned about my wife being "that gal" 'cus "that guy" didn't do his job right. She currently rides a 2016 Cat and is quite spoiled with all that new stuff and is quite taken with the whole riding experience. Her introduction to vintage riding should prove to be interesting. I'm hoping that she comes to understand my history with snowmobiling through vintage machines and riding. All she knows is groomed trails with all of the modern amenities. I also enjoy it and think it's great too.
I would like her to travel back in time with me and experience snowmobiling the way it was, not to stay stuck in the past, but rather, come for a visit once in a while.

75whip,did you go to Milbank? No I didn't go, I was thinking about it. We have friends that live in the Morris, elbow lake area, but everyone was working or had something going on. Maybe next year. I also got alot of family in the fargo area, been meaning to get up that way for a couple years know. I just seen the name of the bar campground and I remembered that place from the wefest days. I just dont need to go to any swap meets right now, Ill just end up buying something and end up getting sidetracked from finishing my other prodjects.

Took the engine in today to have the crank redone, the engine machinist i go to said yep standard sa2-440. Said i will love it when its all done new pistons balanced crank new bearings. Talked to a few people now about it, yep use the dual inlet Donaldson get rid of the y pipe, I asked about dual carbs, everyone said don't waste my time Hook up a single HD. and like weverat said earlier in the post its all about clutching. I know how important that is if that not right any engine is a dog. Now time to find nos points, and condenser. need spark too.

Looking good. I use a copper wire brush to remove all the crap, then wire wool with elbow grease to shine them up in fact i just finihed cleaning up a 297 Sachs tonight. Painting hoods is quite the job, im getting better, painting a black mark II hood here soon for my rat rod. never done black before. Keep up the good work there.

OLDSCORPMAN i have tried that line. She say it would be cheeper for me to hang out in the tavern! Thats why i never tell her what i really paid for something (oh i didn't just say that?) and yea sometimes hanging out in a bar (getting shot down by big breasted gals) would be cheaper

Is this your first Scorpion ? The Sting is a great piece, definitely one of my favorites. Can you post some pics, tell us how you found it etc. Welcome to the site. Here's the engine compartment. The speedo says 865 miles. I had the carb apart and checked it all out and it was clean.
I set it up. It starts first pull and runs very nicely. I'm on the fence on whether I should take it apart and give it a full checkup and reseal it, including centre crank seal or do a minor check by removing cylinders and inspect, or just remove intake and exhaust manifolds and take a look?
What are your opinions ?
I say leave it alone and run it. Best to leave a good running cuyuna alone.
