had a great time at the show and swap and found some really nice oem parts. i was able to purchase the following:
15 nos para-rail suspension springs 4 nos ski spindles for the 70/71 bubble noses. 1 nos late 70's scorpion clutch 1 nos 73 stinger gas tank door 1 nos whip battery tray 2 nos ski spring saddles for shocks 1 nos spark plug cover door for the 73 super stingers 4 nos brake shoes 4 nos rear idler wheels for the para-rail 1 used 70 singer hood with no damage just faded, i think i know someone who can paint it.(hello ddub i need more red flake)
i met up with rene after lunch and took him to the former dealer's spot that i always try to empty out. we were able to find a few parts for his sting. we then went and has a real nice 2 hour talk (which saved me from spending anymore money on parts).
eric i am thinking about going to princeton this year and will be more than happy to share a beer and b.s.

hi rene,
no i will not be showing any sleds. i take an empty trailer up so i can bring more projects home that i don't need. last year i ran into one of the guys at the show i vintage ride with and he was trying to load 3 evinrudes he bought on a small trailer, so we loaded one on my trailer to make his trip home safer.

hi rene, the show part is mostly high dollar sleds now days, they use to get many more regular sleds. the swap has grown every year to the point of being sold out to sellers by 7:00 a.m. in the morning. if i was going to drive 550 miles to a show and swap i would make the trip to the princeton show in mn. it is 3 times the size of this show. i am 5 hours away from this show and that is plenty long for me.

on my 70 scorpion mark II the hood is pretty beat up. between me driving it 3 years and my brother driving it 6 years it was on it's side more than once. i figure it will take 30 hours of fiberglass work before i even paint it. i have been looking for a nice 70 or 71 mark II hood to buy for 2 years now with not much luck. my question is will a mark III hood fit or is it wider because of the wider track.
thanks rick

if it has the factory carb on it, it just uses the knob/rod assm. if it has been converted to a mikuni those cables are available thru denniskirk.com. i should have the rod/knob assm. here as i have converted all my scorpions over to mikuni.

i have another con of a mid mount chassis. i have spent 3 hours after work every day this week and 8 hours today doing body work on a pitted and dented 71 stinger STEEL chassis just to get it ready to paint. you don't have these problems with a aluminum chassis.

I do know the pros ans cons of front mount chassies.
I'm somewhat intrigued by the beautiful Super Stinger 440 model.
A lot of you guys seem to be drawn to rebuilding/restoring mid '70 Scorps and I have to admit, some are just gorgeous.
For this discussion, if we could leave out emotions, what are the pros and cons of mid mount '74-'75 Super Stinger, as I may consider one for my next project (don't tell the wife!).
Rene rene, i grew up driving the mid-mounts while i was in high school 1972-76 and just know these sleds real good, alot of the same parts can be used from 72 thru 75.the other thing is i like the metal flake hoods that came on these. that being said ,the 79 whip i built for my wife is like driving a cadillac compared to the model T ride you get riding mid mounts for any long distance. i want to build a 74 or 75 super stinger in blue flake to complete my mid mount collection of 9 sleds, but you just don't see many for sale in wisconsin. rick

Rick my 400 range whip i rebuilt this winter is 159Q0 needle jet, 6dh4 needle clip second to top, 3.0 cutout valve, 2.0 air jet, and 30 pilot, and ended up 350 main, now my timing is up on the advanced end, and i had a air box on it with out the rubber insert that goes in it. I got a uni pod air filter to put on instead, bit the snow went away so have not tried it with the filter yet, but it ran great, and was scary fast for a little sled, and the plug looked to be a little on the rich side after running it for a few hours. now this is a range whip so im NOT sure whats the story with the exhaust with them, don't now if there more like a sting or a whip exhaust. someone told me that my exhaust gives better performance that a whips, but not my words, I just picked the sled up because it was a easy restore. but im sure a 400 and 440 cuyuna are fairly close in jetting, close in displacement, and same porting. lets us know what works when you figure it out as I got a 440 im going to rebuild this summer. also do you have the angled plug head or straight plug head on that motor? Im not sure if that makes a difference. Eric thank you everyone for the reply's. eric this is a straight plug 79 whip engine. i am going to mount it as is and do some running on the stand tomarrow. we got 15'' of snow on monday and rain all day friday so my 3 acres is pretty sloppy to do a test ride, temp's in the 50's the next 5 day's. rick

did some horse trading today with a fellow scorpion nut. he needed a boogie and rear idler set up to convert a 70 mark II track and i traded one of my extra set-ups for a 290 ccw engine and clutch and a brand new ,still in a sealed plastic bag and mikuni box vm34mm carb. it has a 330 main jet,30 pilot jet,0.5 air jet,159q-0 needle jet,6dh2 jet needle, and 2.5 throttle slide. my question is will this work on a 440 cuyuna engine or what changes will i need to do. this is for a trail rider not a racer.
thanks rick

yes rene i can leave right out my driveway and hit the trail about a 1/4 mile down the road. i have no problem taking my modern out on a 200 mile ride alone, but i don't feel to good riding my vintage alone to far from home. on the weekends i ride with other vintage guys around here and we will go much farther.

just got back from a 22 mile ride, i went out after i got home from work on the 73 400 r.v. i went out alone so i took the trails that were near main roads. it sure was fun to let the 400 get some exercise, came up on some modern sleds and passed them as they were having a smoke break, you should have seen there faces.
