thanks for the compliments. pararailer i,m just self taught you can learn to do it yourself, practice on a hood you dont care about. i'm not sure what to do with the decals, my sister-inlaw owns a sign shoppe and did all the decals on my other sleds, so i have the choice of colors and fonts. i was thinking thin gold boarder and puffy white letters. my other concern is do i make it say whip or whipette as i used the 73 stingerette metal flake. feel free to give me your opinions.
thanks rick

that is a picture of my sled as brought home from the barn i dragged it out of. ddub i don't know if you remember the conversation we had at st.Germain when i was buying paint and flake from you. i brought up how the 73 flake looked bigger then the 72 flake as i had 2 of each hood. i bought the .025 flake from you in both the red and purple and after doing 3 hoods in red i can say for sure the unpainted 73 r.v. hood i haven't touched has larger flake. that being said the .025 looks great on the hoods i have done and no one can really tell the difference. i am going to be using the purple on a non-purple hood in the next couple of weeks so i can't compare that to the original. here are the 3 hoods i did with the .025 flake you can't really tell it's smaller. before after before after before after

first you sand the hood down with 320 grit and make any repairs to the fiberglass, then its 3 coats on black tinted primer/sealer.next wet sand with 320 grit, next lay down 2 coats of flat black base coat and wet sand with 400 grit. you then mix the flake into clear top coat and need to have a nozzle on your gun for flake. i took my gun in to our local paint supplier and he matched up a nozzle. put down 3 coats of flake, then 3 coats of just clear. wet sand with 600 then 1000 and 2000 grit buff out and polish. it takes about 30 hours total.

i was given a 79 440 whip a couple of weeks ago with 800 miles on it that has not been run since the early ninety's. my history with scorpion sleds is mainly pre 1973 so I'm not to smart on these. i cleaned up the points and i have spark now. i have 135 psi on both cylinders, i cleaned out the tank and put all new fuel lines and a filter on it. i took the carb apart and it was one of the worst Ive seen. i soaked it at work in our 5 gallon pail of carb cleaner an was able to get it somewhat clean. my question is do i bother getting a rebuild kit for this or should i just put a mukuni on it like i did with my ccw engines and what size would you recommend.
thanks rick

just took a look at that picture and yes it is different. pulled the flywheel off this morning and gave the points a quick file job and now i have spark. i pulled the carb off but didnt' get a chance to take it apart yet. going to pull the gas tank out and take it to work and put in our hot tank to clean it out.

it's a 440 ddub, it turns over but no spark, gas is bright orange and smells like varnish. going to go thru the fuel system and engine electrical soon to see if i can get it to run.

this is the 3rd time this has happened in the last 6 months. first time i come home from a vintage ride in jan. and there is a 72 stinger II with a 400 r.v. engine in it sitting by my shop. note taped to windsheild says, i work with your brother he said you collect these i hope you dont mind me dropping it off , i just wanted it out of my garage. 2nd time happened in april in was cleaning the garage that is attached to our house and a guy pulls in the driveway and asks if i'm the scorpion guy. i said i have a few are you looking for parts? he says no he has a 73 superstinger thats missing the seat do i want it. i asked how much, he said i'll drop it off later in the day, no charge as long as i dont turn around and sell it. come back from dinner out with the wife and there sits a 340 superstinger in our driveway. i live in the country and we normaly see more tractors then cars on our road. however because of a campground on the lake down the road from us, fridays and sundays we see a lot of trucks and campers coming and going from the camp ground. well last friday nite i was moving my sleds to the outside of my shop to do some welding inside and some big dodge dually with a fifth wheel camper pulls on the shoulder by my mail box. i figure the guy needs directions to the campground as this happens 2 or 3 times a week. he ask me what year my scorpions are and i told him 70,72,and 3 73's, he then says he has a black scorpion with red decals on it that has 800 miles on it, been sitting in his barn since 1991 when it wouldn't start. i'm thinking bubble nose at this point, he said he would like it out of his barn and would i want it. i said depends on the condition and price. well today i get back from the 4th of july parade in west bend and this is what was by my shop with a note, that said ,no charge just fix it up like your other ones.

the 1973-1978 panther drive sprockets are the same as the scorpion 2.52's. i have used these on both my 73 scorpions i restored last year. the bad news is arctic cat has not made them since 2009. the arctic cat part number is 0102-083. i punch this number in every day on ebay and have only been able to buy 3 sets in the last 2 years.kimpex still shows the panther sprocket in their 2014 catalog .their number is 04-108-60.

just find a 71 or 72 stinger III parts sled, it will have everything you need to do the track swap. i did this back in 1979 for my buddys dad and he still uses the sled for ice fishing.

hey ddub, the john deere engines used a 18m.m. piston pin while the scorpion ccw's used a 16m.m. pin. i know of one person that did do this change over because he had to send the crank out for a new center seal he had the shop put in 2 n.o.s. john deere piston rods so he could run the john deere 18mm pistons.

the pto side pistons you cant find anywhere they are the the one that usually melt and havent been made since 1982. i was lucky and found 3 n.o.s. mag side pistons last year and bought them and 4 extra sets of rings. the r.v. piston is very different then the port ones. whenever i see an ccw 400 r.v. engine for sale i try to buy it just to start building up a parts supply. the engine did come from obj1, i'll have to check the warranty with him . i put over 400 miles on the engine this winter and it ran great until the pulley blew. about the only thing a guy could to do is put a temp gauge on the sled so you might get a chance to save a melt down. rick

yes i was about 200 yards from a road, one of the guys on the ride pulled my sled up to the road , and then i had to call my wife to come get me. i am confused about the fan pulley blowing apart because the nut is still tight on it.
